got a barebones. put cpu, memory, wireless card in it. no hard drive cause apparantly i am guessing it HAS to have a SATA hard drive? i was just going to through mine in from my inspiron XPS. am i wrong ? anyways. flip it over, press the power to make sure it comes on and no display!!!!??? are there cables that need to be connected? will it fire up with no hard drive? also, what does the cable in the same spot as the hard drive go to? mine is just hanging there. i am not talking about the the section with wireless card. under hard drive is what i mean.

what could be wrong with the display?? do you got to hook up something for it? also, i notice that i cant even eject the cd drive. figured i would just try that. but all i get are the power button lights to come on. no screen, and drive wont eject. please HELP!!

Barebone Laptops don't come with a hard drive unless you customize them from a reseller(place you bought it from and you or they install it. You will have to install a harddrive and then install a Operating system like Windows or Linux from a dsk or use a linux live cd(google it). Without a hard drive all you can access is the BIOS by pressing F2 when it starting up. If you access the BIOS i dont recommend you do anything in them unless you know what your doing.
BTW what company did you buy your laptop from and have you contacted their support for addiotion help>

Is it the T5500 or the T2300 becuase if its the T5500 you might have to upgrade/flash your BIOS and are you sure you are pressing F2 after you press the power button when your lappy is starting up

t2300. and why press F2? I am never even seeing the phoenix screen (i think that is the type of bios) or ANYTHING. never even a flicker from the screen when i turn it on.
also, i read in another thread to try seeing if the keyboard is connected by pressing a capslock or num lock button. i did this and no light comes on to verify the lock. brand new ram is installed. maybe the cpu is bad??? or would i still be able to lock the caps??
i am not even hearing a beep from the computer of a error or anything?!?

Yeah check to make everything is secured and that all the screws expecially for the CPU heatsink/fan are tighten properly and did you use a manual to put in the CPU or did you just figure it out by yourself.

Don't Panic! (with nod to HHGTTG)
It would sound like something isn't plugged in. There's lotsa cabley things and stuff. I'm sure chrisyano will come by with his HEL80 assembly video. :p

just reseated everything again. does it matter which slot the ram goes in? i got one 1gb in the slot closest to the motherboard. cpu is locked down tight.

oh. and i tried watchin that video. took 45 min to a minute into it. i got dial up :(

you might want to try both slots. i don't own a hel80, but for mine, if there is just one stick of ram, it needs to be in a specific slot.

I would recommend watching it just to make sure you put in everything correctly and securely and where did you buy the Barebone from?

i got the video trying to load again. maybe it will get through before i head to bed. i put the ram in myself. had it unlocked, set it in by the arrrow, turned the screw all the way tight and the cpu locked in. put artic silver 5 on it, and then the heatsink. i build all of my computers cause i cheap. took me six months almost to come up with enought money for a laptop (this one), so i cut corners although i wanted one from powernotebooks since they seem to get a high rating, but needed a laptop before i go back to school and didnt have the extra couple hundred bucks for one.

as far as cables, i have not unpluged anything except keyboard. i looked under the keyboard and checked the four plugs according to the disassembly guide posted above. all seem to be tight.

since i hear no beep from computer. i am leaning towards a bad cpu or motherboard? or perhaps it is booting, but something is unhooked somewheres else for the screen. would that be why there is no beep? or do they always beep when you guys start up yours?

microPC is where i got it from.

is your computer on ac power? can you see that the battery is charging? if not, it could be some sort of problem with powering your motherboard.

yes. i tried hooking up AC and charging light came on a green color. then i tried turning it on. and nothing

i about to head to bed. i will let the video load throughout the night. hopefully internet dont shut off. and i will be calling the company tommorrow to talk to them. any more suggestions would be helpful guys. i am narrowing it down to the cpu, but if it is i will have a brand new laptop sitting here for a while since i cant buy another cpu right now. hopefully something simple though.

here is direct link to laptop on micro express site. http://www.microexpress.net/prodcustom.asp?linenumber=158

    Battery Status Indicator behavior
    Charging: Solid amber
    Fully Charged: Solid green
    Discharging: Off
Critical Low: Blinks amber > approximately 3 minutes left; system beeps

Green means it fully charge so i dont thinks its the battery.

    Thx for the link
BTW do you have the EL80 or the HEL80. I believe there are no hardware
    diff besides the following.

    The Compal HEL80 has:
    1. The brushed aluminum trim on the LCD cover and keyboard
    2. Multimedia buttons on the left
    3. TPM 1.2 by Infineon
    4. Caps/Num/Scroll lock lights.
    5. Lighted Power On and accessory buttons
    6. Wider touchpad buttons
    7. EL80 only comes with the WXGA Glossy screen

fixed it! bent pins on the cpu. ha.

anywho, waiting on the hard drive to come in and i set to go. hope SATA speeds are noticable enough to justify having to by a new one.
