my advent laptop has on previous occasions shut down unexpectedly, but has now shut down completely and i am unable to restart it. I have tried unplugging it and removing the battery and trying again, but nothing happens at all, i just don't know what to do, if anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful!

I also have this problem - judging from other posts I've seen about this, it seems to be a problem with dissipating the heat produced. Removing the battery (running off mains) seems to solve it, but that's not much good if you were going to be using it on the move. Other suggestions are putting it on blocks and reducing procesor performance, but hen I tried these (with the battery fitted) I didn't notice much improvement, other have done. The battery life on this machine is pretty poor anyhow: I bought mine to fill the role of a small, easily portable machine, so it doesn't bother me much, but it seems to be an inherent problem of this machine.

You could also look into undervolting the CPU. See the Undervolting Guide. This will reduce the heat without affecting performance.
