you mean tight as in stuck to the cpu die? very gently give it a slight twist fom side to side it will start to loosed up after a few times then it should come right off make 100% sure to get all the old thermal tape off of there or your temps will most likely be worse than before and use only a tiny amount of as a little goes a long way to much as and again your temps will actually rise

thanks. good suggestion. i'm a bit twisted about the thermal tape thing. do i clean the heat sink down to the metal? or do i leave the pad that is on there (so tightly stuck to the cpu/gpu)? hahaha... i really am not sure what i'm doing here.

you need to clean all of the old pad off of the heatsink and cpu. You should be able to see copper on the bottom of the sink.
If you have to scrape the old pad off, be careful not to nick the copper too much (scratches lessen the efficiency of the heat transfer). After getting everything off, clean it with a lint free rag and some high quality rubbing alcohol.

yep correct you can use a plastic tool or a old credit card or simply your finger nail. use some rubbing alch. this will make i much easier. make sure its spotless then apply a TINY amount of as and spread it evenly over the cpu die with the edge of a credit card or a small straight plastic tool. you should only have to use a spot about half the size of a piece of long grain rice. no more

By the way, you can hit it up with Intel TAT and then try to pull it off while it is still hot. It should come off much easily.

or use a thin piece of fishing line and gently slide it under the heatsink to cut through it use a sawing motion back and forth and be gentle
