The video-drivers that came with my pre-installed 64-bit vista notebook seem to me to be rather unimpressive in the framerate department, so I thought I'd try downloading something from nVidia.com -- more likely to be something officially signed there, I figured, than on the laptopvideo2go site...

So I download the vista64 drivers for the 8600m, which says it's whql certified, but when I ran the executable, it extracts some files, starts an installer process, and then it complains with the message:

The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

Just wondering if anyone else has been through this yet...

nVidia doesn't support it's M series, so what you get on the sager site, or whatever is installed is pretty much the official. You have to get drivers from manufacturers.

Maybe your framerates are low simply because it's 64 bit Vista.

Did you install the drivers with the modded .INF file?

I don't think he downloaded the drivers from laptopvideo2go. SHouldn't have to mod anything if they were nVidia drivers should you?

I didn't originally, cuz I'd heard vista-64 would be picky about non-certified drivers... But I've just downloaded the ones from laptopvideo2go, overwrote the nv_disp.inf file, and ran the setup.exe

    so far:
windows warned me that the publisher couldn't be certified, but i chose install anyway.

it was extracting files and whatnot, so i wandered over to the fridge to get a beer, and heard a funny little noise. came back, and the display was displaying what was clearly a text-mode screen (blank, with a blinking cursor). Despite the nostalgia induced, I was a little bit panic'ed!!!

But it came back to a normal display mode after a little bit, and before i knew it, there was a popup asking me to reboot. Rebooted fine, and it appears to have taken.

so they fixed it in 163.15... good

then my recommendations are 162.22 and 163.15. 165.01 is a benchmark driver and has a bunch of issues. It is older than the rest!

Which modded .inf file did you guys install along with the 163.15? I installed 163.16 with the modded .inf file for 163.11 since there are none for the rest that followed.

I am getting somewhat sluggish gameplay on mine playing C&C3 (ultra high settings) and Supreme Commander (1280x800 all high settings).

Use the 163.15 INF? Go to the page for the 163.15 and the top area should have a modded inf link

You guys can't bring up Display Settings, click the button that says Advanced Settings, and get a popup with a bunch of tabs ([Adapter] [Monitor] [Troubleshoot] [Color Management] [GeForce 8600M GT])? That last one, [GeForce 8600M GT] has a button for "start the NVIDIA Control Panel"...

lol no it disappears off the computer completely: heres why... I'm an old ATi user (AiW 9800 pro) and when you update drivers you have to wipe them first and then install fresh.. So the 163.15 doesn't actually include control panel.

I fixed it by reinstalling the CD drivers, and then installing 163.15 over it! no uninstall or anything lol works great
