    hello
im useing my laptop on my boat and im trying to connect to the internet via a wireless router in the marina. the signal is very weak and i can only just pick it up (-86dB to -95dB) and only if i put my laptop right up against the window.
So I have bought a seprate belkin wireless usb dongle on an extention so i can have the laptop on my lap and the wireless adaptor by the window.
But i can only get on the internet for about 3 to 4 minutes and then it gets cut off.once it has gone off i can not receive any signal untill i disconnect and reconnect it.then it will work for another 3-4 mins.
I have tryed disconnecting the internal wireless to try to stop it intervering but that has not helped.
Does anyone have any ideas because this is so frustrating?
    Thanks.Please help.

How far away you are from router? Try updating your wireless driver from here (assuming you didn't swap wireless card for anything)
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2753

I got better signal strength by updating to version 12.04.0
    Before updating I got 4.3 ~ 4.4mbps mbps after updating 4.8mbps.

Or alternately you could get wireless extender/access point to further extend signal strength.

    Or get satellite internet?

    http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html

I went from a 10-20% signal strength to 40-70% depending on the weather with this diy cardboard and foil parabolic antenna.

It really works well if you have something you can attach it to.

edit: You may need to open the dongle and solder on a wire so that you can use this if you do not have an antenna on it already.

    Use a Linksys WRT350N and modify the firmware to a DD-WRT v24 SP1.
You can use the router as a repeater (to reamp and strengthen the signal) or wireless bridge (as your more powerful wireless adapter).
