So I'm getting more than a little anxious to have my IFL90 in my hot little hands... Are there any other models I should consider? (Key point, is can I get it before July 3rd?)...

    Here's what I'm looking for:

    size: 14" preferred, 15.4" okay
    cpu: Core2duo, 7300 or faster
screen: matte! 1440x900 preferred, 1680x1050 is fine. Glossy sucks when you use it for 10+ hours a day (why yes, I do need a life!)
ram: must be able to support at least 3GB, 4GB preferred... (run Oracle10, Studio2005, IIS, lotsa web pages, etc, like to fire up a game w/out having to close everything else down first!)
gpu: want to run doom3/quake4/half-life2 at 60+ fps, without sacrificing too much in the details or resolution. dx10 is a nice-to-have, but not essential, imho.
os: I really do need to try out Vista-64, to see how badly the code I write behaves on it... Am okay with buying w/out any OS and just getting the retail Vista-business. Also want to install Kubuntu or similar for dual-boot.
optical: would like to have dvd-writer, but not a big deal.
battery-life: able to play 3+ hours worth of ripped movies from hard-disk, for those boring plane-rides.

Currently, I've got an IFL90 scheduled for delivery July 25th with the following specs from powernotebooks for $1700 and change:

    C2D T7300
    1680x1050 matte screen
    2 GB Ram (1 SoDIMM)
    120 GB 5400 hdd
    dvd-writer optical disk
    the infamous 8600M-GT gpu
    wi-fi
    vista-biz-64
    9cell battery

So anyways, I guess I'm hoping to find if there's anything that'll come reasonably close to my wants that I could get before July 3rd, and barring that, if there's anything that's a better match for my wants than the IFL90, that I could get by the end of July. I really can't wait into August.

    Thanks!

@dolto - there a link anywhere to which inspirons will have the 8600?
@mythless - sure, but none have a decent gpu in anything smaller than 17".

Guess I'll probably just wait it out. :-(

Oh god do not even consider Inspirons. The build quality of the IFL90 will be so much better than any new inspiron, it will last you longer, and it comes standard with a 3 year warranty. Don't even consider getting a Dell at this point.

Who knows if the new 15'' inspiron will even come with an 8600.. it may come with an 8400 like the last generation had a 7400.

Ok, I hate to even go down this path but how do you know that you are getting your IFL90 on the 25th of July?
I have had mine ordered since June 4th, 07 and still no firm date.

BTW... I agree with the other posters.... wait it out. It will be an awesome machine and it the ability to find a comparable machine by July 3rd is pretty much zero.

I also know about impatience. I orginially ordered a PowerPro 2:38 (17" screen, loaded with goodies) but decided after it arrived at my house that it was WAY too big to carry on the road with me (I travel extensively), so not only do I have to wait, but I had to ship a beautiful machine back to them..... Talk about agony!

yeah, I can't imagine buying an Inspiron, just figured it wouldn't hurt to see what's new.

As for my ship-date, I don't know that it's fully confirmed, but Ron and Donald were confident I'd have it by then (earlier if I'd wanted it, but will be out of town for a while).

You could get a Sager 2090. It's a IFL90 with a crappier warranty package, but they might be released a tad earlier. I got impatient and bought an Apple, just to sell it 2 weeks later. I'm now just waiting it out for a 1440x900 IFL90.

Sager will not be shipping the WSXGA+ any sooner than we will be shipping it, but for brand new orders the line at Sager is much shorter. However we expect to have all pre-orders shipped in the 2nd and 3rd week of July on a first order in - first order out basis so by the 4th week of July the wait time should be the same between the Sager NP2090 and the PowerPro J 10:15 with the WSXGA+ screen.

It depends on when you pre-ordered it, and how many we get on the first shipment...3rd week is conservative...2nd week could be optimistic but many people will get theirs then.

It is pretty difficult to put an exact date on its delivery at this time.

I would suggest you ask Xoticpc when to expect it...and even they won't know exactly until the actually arrive in the US.

It's amazing to me how many of you are able to get so wound up over a pre-order item that never had a specific ship date, then to top it off don't like that you are ordering such a cool machine that you have to wait in a virtual line for your order :D

As Donald states it is very hard to put a precise date on the shipment. PowerNotebooks and XoticPC will be receiving the IFL90's at the same time. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about your order.

with all this angst and frustration, I'm gonna hold myself till christmas. Hopefully by then, drivers will be mature, Vista won't suck so badly, and these computers will come down some in price with the release of more Vista/DX10 computers. And if that doesn't happen...well, then I guess I'm going to be shelling out the clams for the MBP and a copy of XP...such is life. As for now, I'll let the rest of you poor souls scream the anthem of the early-adopter. (This is, of course, not to say that I am not looking into one of these lovely machines for myself.)

Well... some of us have little choice. My current Dell laptop is in intensive care right now until I replace it with a young new frisky laptop. The HD died last month and rather than trying to get an old IDE drive for it, I went with a SATA that I'm planing to put to good use somewhere else in the future. This laptop has no SATA support so I'm plugging the drive through a SATA to USB interface and boot from USB. To keep everything together, I've taped the USB cable to the USB port and taped the HD enclosure to the back of the LCD. This is good enough to move about the house but I would not want to be carrying it around in a backpack.

When I look at my laptop, I'm having flashbacks of some of my stays in the hospital. Anyway, waiting until Xmas is not an option for me.

Mine isn't quite as bad as lemur, but I'm in the same boat. I have an old Compaq R3000 with a battery that doesn't hold a charge, I have to hold the power connector just right to get it power at all. Still I waited for Santa Rosa and pre-ordered a machine understanding what that implies. I don't blame the dealer for the delays, but I am getting anxious to get it!

Ah, well, I certainly understand that, in some cases, you absolutely positively need it right this second. Ailing laptops will do that to a bloke. But especially as this is my first laptop...ever, I want to be sure that I'm getting a wonderful product, which this Compal is shaping up to be, minus the woes/travails of Vista. And I'm just a huge procrastinator anyway, so putting off this purchase fits in perfectly with my personality. hehe. And to both of you, I offer my condolences. The death of a technological device is never a pretty thing.

Yeah, I tend to procrastinate for purchases like that but can't wait much longer now. :-/

I've been waiting to see the Dell 1520 but what I've seen does not impress me. There's the ThinkPad t61p which was also supposed to come out soon but seems to be pushed to July.

Yeah I was really close to canceling my order and shop around elsewhere, but the machines that are powerful are huge! I want to stay in the 15" area and there is no way I'm getting a mammoth 17". I carry my notebook everywhere.

With that said, I know there are alot people getting pissed off about the pushback on the date. I predict that people will get their machines on the very beginning of August with all the uncertainty of dates and the fact that no one knows wtf is going on. Not only that, but I hope people are canceling thier orders. The more they cancel, the more I move up in line is the way I see it. Good things come for those who wait... 8600GT :)

Yeah, that's true. But for some, who need a new comp right now, they can't afford to wait till August. Which pushes you farther up the line, and gives those procrastinators like me a good chance of getting one sometime before next year, seeing as these things are gonna be hot once reviews start coming out (at least I hope :D ).

I don't know who this impatience is, but my vote is to STRIKE BACK!

Why get all foamy at the mouth over your new machine when you could be organizing your installation disks for when your new system comes out? I mean come on.. how much fun can that be? Especially if you have a bunch of those games that come on 3+ CD's. :D

I've been 2 weeks away from getting my machine for a month, and I'm still 2 weeks away...and its 3.5 weeks since I organized my installation disks. I even cleaned a space for it off my desk.

I don't blame the dealers though. Being in technology myself I understand delays. but I am understandably excited to get it.

    (for bumping purposes mainly)

Well, I saw Justin's post somewhere that the WSXGA+ screen IFL90's aren't expected even this week anymore... Which would sure make it seem very unlikely that I'll have mine before August, much less a few days prior, so I can get it all set up before my trip...

Soooo, I'm looking around again, 'cept now it would seem I'll require something pre-built, but having a devil of a time finding notebooks with:
    1) matte screens
    2) handle more than 2 GB of RAM

Whaddya all think of the Asus F3SV-A1 (1440x900). It's glossy, but it seems everything with a semi-decent gaming video-card is glossy. :(

(original desires reposted, not intending to be spamming)

    size: 14" preferred, 15.4" okay
    cpu: Core2duo, 7300 or faster
screen: matte!

Cuz going glossy and 8600-gs is enough of a compromise, going below my favorite resolution (1400x1000) is too much to bear. I'm gonna keep looking around a bit (and hanging onto my ifl-90 pre-order), but for now I've got a standby (Asus F3SV) that I can get in short order from newegg.

the WXGA comes with a 8600gt card, not 8600gs. however, it is 256mb instead of 512mb, which the WXGA+ and WSXGA+ have

bingo, pyro! Though actually, I've ordered the PowerPro 10:15, wsxga+ (matte!), T7300, 2gb-1sodimm, etc, but I'm afraid it isn't going to arrive in time. And everything I've read says that switching over to the Sager 2090 will only put me at the end of the line. My order was placed in late may, so I should be in the initial batch that go out, once the finally DO come in...

Ok, so I am going to double post...shoot me if you like but here is our official announcement:

"We just received our first shipment of the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screens, but we only got a very few. We now expect we will receive yet another shipment next week and hopefully all pre-orders will ship by the end of July or at the latest in early August."
