hold on this is a work in process im listing 15 inch compal models right now.

both of these machines come with the wxga screen

im thinking its exactly the same screen. this is because the e1505 has the exact same screen as the asus s96j which is vaguely related in vbi program to the compa hel 80.

Ok but paladin listed the wsxga option as 200 nits screen, which is not the same as a e1505 screen.

these two machines use instant on media and have option of internal tv tuner

compal hel 80 has 3 usb e1505 has 4 I think im seeing all other ports are the same

obviously the hel 80 has a nvidia 7600 and the e1505 has only x1400.

hel 80 has a fingerprint reader and camera

I think were going to find these machines use the same motherboard. ooo except the e1505 has to have dells unique mxm axiom but the compal pci bus has not been described that i can see.
I was going to include the toshiba sattelite but ive run out of energy for tonight.

I will compare 3 models at a future date, hgl 30, toshiba m100, dell e1405

i believe this is false. for instance, the toshiba libretto. Many of sonys laptops dont make the us market anymore as they are too expensive. Sonys manufactured laptops are mostly the very smallest ones. I am reasonably certain that the sony sz is made by sony based on information and news from this site.
This I am not certain of. no internet list will really make me certain of this for a while because Ive seen too many different rankings. But this is quite possible
Ok as I wrote in my last post this is a mostly business model difference. The company or companies that used to be acer manufacturing, they are seperate companies which acer owns control of. So long as you, a laptop business professional, know this Im fine with not elaborating on it because I, a consumer dont really want to get into it in detail. If you are interested in knowing because it brings you advantage in your business I highly recomend it.
Ill take your word for it to a point. What Im having trouble with is finding is these models made by arima inventec and wistron. Im finding like... oh a very small percentage of the models I see are made by any of these companies. I do believe acer travelmates are made by wistron. I believe, wistron is the travelmate manufacturing arm of acer. I could be wrong, as I said I always care about the correct information but its not going to really matter to me about what owns what. I have found laptops called wistron that are sold on the world market, that actually have acer written on their motherboards. This mystery must have a clue to the answer of this problem but it might not. I mean here in 2006, not from the date of this article you posted.

But by logic many of them are. I postulate that the us market has a lot fewer brands present than the world market.

Ok and what I have to add ok... Is that this business is way more convoluted than even this confusing thread is. That the companies we are calling the manufacturers arent even the manufacturers any more. they are merely contract go betweens for chinese industry.

And anyway, thank you paladin for your work and data. I will give you an extremely valuable rep point anyway. ;o)

Um. To be the technology leader.

Sony or toshiba would make something on their own to bring it to market faster. Use vacant factories. throw together spare parts. these are two of the largest electronics companies in the world they can do whatever they want and it doesnt have to make sense. It probably does but it doesnt have to. If sony sold every laptop in the world this year it would amount to a small percentage of their playstation sales.
For what it matters, sony makes some of their most expensive models, and some of their cheapest models too.

Im not sure what you believe but I can say this, in the internet age dont base what you believe on any assumption. The whole internet is there for you to look it up. Sony and Toshiba manufacture laptops in Japan, Im positive.

in the case of acer, read the article paladin posted. They sold the manufacturing business to support the marketing business. but I dont think it 'closed' i mean if this happened in 2000, theres a lot more of the things cranking out today than 2000. A business in taiwan is using those assets and making notebooks. I seem to think there are at least two companies that were part of the acer manufacturing business....Now who or what is going on with acer, ask a stockholder I cant really research in depth.

I am not sure what your reference to (no 56k) is, but all of our laptops have RJ-11 jacks and do support 56k modems.

don't forget that Marasst has the pics of every Sonoma and Core Duo Compal model that you may find useful.

Also don't read too much on external apperances.. people keep thinking Asus makes Macbook Pro because it looks like the W2 and W1 when it is Quanta that makes it.. who on the other hand, has no model remotely resembling any macbooks.

But sony and toshiba BOTH have huge amounts of people with money put into the businesses of which every year sony have to release a statement outlying how much money they made/lost where they made/lost this money and how much it was.... investors wouldnt be happy to see under 'notebook manufacturing' ($xx,xxx, xxx, xxx) (the brackets mean loss) its simple efficiency scale... unless you can produce a certain amount of a product there is dis-economies of scale.... for example if sony were to make 1 laptop for 300$ using 10 people each getting paid 20$ and 100$ on components and they sell it for 350$ then they would make a profit of 50$ now they make 2 laptops same 10 people earning 20$ and a minimal loss of 10$ on the components for bulk buying then they sell it off for the same 350$ thats a profit on each machine of 160$ you see how that works.... its to do with economies of scale the more you produce (up to a certain point) the lower your marginal costs are... it all depends on Land/Labour/Capital and Enterprise the 4 main points of economics :)

Ok well... thats fine. Thats a theory. You can ask me to explain this for you but youd be better off researching it yourself.

I can tell you this based on my education. Sony and toshiba, sharp and panasonic all make laptops mostly for the japanese home market. They make a lot of money on those.
As the years have gone by, and the yen has doubled the dollar since the 80s, almost nothing they make can be sold in the us. So they buy taiwanese things for the us market.

the japanese consumer is way smarter than the us consumer. They know exactly where all of their stuff is made and how long its going to last before they buy it. They spend a lot of their time in consumer education related activities.
They wouldnt buy a taiwanese laptop. They might buy a Korean one. They also only want very small laptops, not a 15 inch one but a 12 inch one.

stockholders for sony us, they think exactly like you are saying. Buy the taiwanese stuff and sell it to the us market. Not enough people want japanese made electronics in the us, the consumers are dumb. It doesnt mean they stop producing computers, they still make computers. They just import fewer to the US.

ok now your welcome for taking time to respond to your question on industry. But what we need to figure out next is what does this matter to you the consumer? I mean Im just taking time to respond to a few forumers that are calling me 'wrong' so I feel motivated to find out what is right.

I want to get to a conclusion to all of this and its this. The us laptop market is peculiar and a lot of the data on it is unknown. If someone says something along the lines of " compal is the 2nd largest notebook maker in the world' the truth is, that might not even be right. Its very confusing how it works.

what makes you think that Japanese laptops for its domestic market, haven't outsourced manufacturing to Taiwan? For the most part, they have a number of the same models there as do the US (plus a bit more), that come from the same ODM. And not only that, other Japanese products such as the Playstation, etc, are and continue to be built elsewhere. Although yes, the Japanese do tend to prefer ultra portables.

    what makes me think that?

Id rather answer like this. What makes you think otherwise?

The models Im refering to, such as the sony sz, are made in japan, they say made in japan on them.
I will eventually dig up a link I see on forums like this that sells japanese domestic market laptops.

I dont know the data for how much of the japan market of laptops are made in japan. I estimate its pretty high, based on what I know about the japanese consumer. But they buy taiwanese too, its just they wouldnt throw down real cash on it they know the difference.

what makes me think about the japanese consumer and describe it differently than the us consumer? College class on consumer marketing. We got to learn about a lot of japanese companies and how they work. And they work very differently than western companies.

Do you expect me to write out a lecture for you?

I cant even remember what im responding to anymore. I think somewhere I said that toshiba and sony make their own laptops. And then a few of you contradicted this.... so youre all wrong can i repeat that lol? Im glad we all know the facts now.
And then Im explaining why when the truth is Im not certain and I dont care. But I know they do, would you like to say otherwise?

Sorry, just because a laptop says "Made in Japan" does not necessarily mean that it is entirely made there.. in this day of globalization, parts are made from various countries, and it a "Made in xxxx" label could simply mean that it was assembled in country xxxx, but was manufactuered in country yyyy, with some components coming from country zzzz. Anyone who's taken classes in global economics and human geography can tell you this.

Furthermore, Sony for example, not only outsources production of laptops to Taiwanese companies, but also PS3s and PSP
    http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=52654
you can take similar articles, and no where does it say that contracts being made between these manufacturers and OEMs are being made exclusively for export models.

NEC, a Japanese vendor that doesn't sell laptops in the US, has NEC as its ODM for not only laptops, but for other electronics as well.

    ok

Sony manufactures notebook computers. I own a sony laptop

It says made in japan. It has a motherboard, made by sony. sony manufactures some apple laptops as well, or they had in the past.

a sony playstation will say made in taiwan, and the motherboard will say the manufacturer on it, not sony then....
I dont know what percentage of laptops that are sold as sony vaios are manufactured in japan. But I know some are.

Some parts might be made somewhere else. no doubt. But by Sony, as the manufacturer. Not Asus, not compal. Sony is the manufacturer of sony Vaios, in japan. Mostly the small models. Such as the TX. Some sony vaios might even be made in korea or china for all I know, by Sony. Not asus.

Not contracted out. Sony is a ODM, they make some of their own laptops. YES. YES THEY ARE. they are a computer manufacturer.

Well, in time they could contract out any of their stuff to other companies. Are you interested in learning about Sony, or what? A lot of sony car stereos are made by jvc, a lot of stuff that says sony is made by another company.

But a lot of it is made by Sony. In japan.

A sony vaio could have parts made outside of japan. I mean i believe all hard drives are made in far east, all cpus are made in this country etc. Its made by sony though, it says made in japan. Its different than a vaio they have that is made by asus, it having an asus motherboard and it saying made in taiwan or made in china.

Oh ya no doubt. I feel Im responding to you, and you are merely contradicting and providing no proof. I feel compelled to answer but I will ignore from now on.

I dont have time to research it for you at the moment but ill repeat that if its important enough to you to know, go look it up.
Do you have some sort of proof or reason that laptops that say made in japan, manufactured by sony motherboards that say made by sony are actually made by another company??

I mean Im trying to understand you. Id rather give you time to organize what youre saying it doesnt make any sense to me Im just trying to help you in learning about whatever it is you want to learn about.

I have a good research point for you to think about based on the small amount of taiwan manufacturing data ( contradicting itself) youve already listed. Ok... if taiwanese companies make this amount of laptops, say 90% of the worlds market... who makes the other percent? Who do you think makes the laptops not made by taiwanese companies. Who are they? Im telling you its sony toshiba panasonic and sharp samsung and lg too. Do you think Im wrong? I mean I cant spend any more time than I already have but that should help you get this clear. If its still not clear, you need to go look it up for yourself until it is clear. Otherwise you just wont know....

cool man i understand. And that makes sense to me. Only the thing is, they do make their own laptops so there must be something else involved. I gave you some theories but but why do my theories matter? I think the bottom line is just that none of us really know which is fine.

im going to enlist gorens help in this because im not going to have the uninterrupted online time for a long time. For some reason hes very interested in this but needs my time to figure it out. unfortunately thats not going to work out im going to be putting all research internet projects for this site on the back burner for some time.

    http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

this program will tell each user who is the manufacturer of their laptops motherboard.

Now, so far as i know the company called the odm makes the motherboard. If the laptop uses compal as the odm, it will say compal. Quanta will say quanta.

Now Ive seen instances where this is not the case as well this is not in the fool proof stage yet.

A poll should be started in the most viewed part of the forum, where everyone is asked what their laptop is, which model, and who makes the motherboard ( where it says its made on the bottom is fine too country of origin)

If your laptop is made by asus, it will say asus. The dell e1705 shoudl say compal

    Ill start with mine,

    sony pcg nvr 23
    motherboard manufacturer : SONY corporation
    model : q-project

barring some rosetta stone document that someone on the internet has already done this.... this is the only way the users at nbr are going to be able to figure out who makes what machine. I hope someone will take this project up. I think it will be very educational.
