The volume on my laptop is weak when playing DVDs. It seems ok on other applications. Any Ideas ?

This is common for dvd's!
Movie soundtracks are extremely dynamic, ranging from near silence to intense explosions. In order to support an increased dynamic range and hit peaks (near the 2V RMS limit) without distortion, the average sound level must be lower. This is why the line volume from DVD's is lower than from almost all other sources.
The audio codec also determines how loud the dvd plays back and most of them only allow you to turn it up by a small amount.
But if you have PowerDVD(5 or above) you can try this to increase the volume a little:
1. Open the PowerDVD software.
2. On the screen for the PowerDVD software, right-click, and then select Configuration.
3. In the Configuration window, click the Audio tab.
4. On the Audio tab, click Advanced, and then click the Miscellaneous tab.
5. On the Miscellaneous tab, in the Dynamic Range Compression area, click to select "Noisy Environment" option, and then click OK.
6. On the Audio tab, click OK.

I don't have Power DVD, but I appreciate you explaining the volume is weak. Thanks

DUDE!
I have been going a bit crazy because of this low-volume situation in DVD playback. My laptop is brand-new, and I have been at a loss to believe that there could be some configurational issue to prevent decent playback volume!
I recently discovered this post:

I implemented the AC3 Filter mentioned and boosted my gain. In a word: SHAZAAM! My volume is back up where it belongs and SHOULD have been from the outset.
I hope this can work for you because any less is utterly ridiculous and unacceptabe!
I downloaded my AC3 Filter installer from SourceForge.
Good luck,
