^ ah that would explain why I didn't see it on NEC of UK.. although I found out about the LaVie at mobile Review (i believe it is a Russian site?)

But one gotta admit.. the styling looks exactly like Fujitsu!! the black lay out, silver lines, and white keyboards.. they mimic the best style [8D]

i'm not aware of any non-competes that NEC would have, but it is true they do not sell in the USA (well, except for a PDA style device called MobilePro (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005BHRV/102-9210892-4672111?v=glance)

the LaVie notebook line is another one of those "gotta be in Japan to buy" specials. They had some innovative stuff I heard about with speakers being built into the screen...don't know what happened to that.

Is the NEC Lavie laptop any good? I was offered this for a reasonable price except that (1) I am not Japanese and Japanese windows and probably also keyboard are no use to me, and (2) I can't find any reviews on the net about this model. Please help. Thanks.

No NEC laptops sold in North America. I recently called NEC parts looking for a hard disk for my NEC Versa LX. I love this notebook ...but was told no luck getting new NEC's in this part of the world. ..**as it turned out, no hard disk for Versa LX either. So ..I googled ..and found supplier for new hard disk that suits my needs. By the way NEC service is very good. I would buy a new NEC if they were available here
