i looked over the sticky and did a quick search on the forum, but everything is in regards to how to flash your bios or flashing probs etc. I don't know much, so could someone inform me on whats the purpose of this, and why its done. appreciate the help and this is a great site.

Updates to your bios usually make the system run better or add more features like support for newer processors. If you are happy with your system and don't need anything that newer bios' provide it is gererally suggested that you leave it as it is. Hope this helps.

Basically BIOS updates cover things like how certain devices are run by the system, etc. Newer BIOS updates can fix problems, but they are usually not perfect either. You may fix one problem but cause another.

As motors4fun mentioned, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm running BIOS version 101B--about as early as you can get and I have yet to see something that makes me want to do an update.

My HEL80 came with an early bios 105 something and i noticed quite a few times that when i go to log into my computer it would not let me select the space to put the password in I went to 114B and things have never been better.

I upgraded mine because the bios version right after the one my HEL80 came with had some fixes for the fan noise.

So far, this is the only one that has me interested in doing an upgrade. But as the fan noise/cycling doesn't bother me (I pretty much don't hear it at all unless I'm in a quiet room and even then it doesn't bother me), it's not high on my list of things to do.

I didn't do it for noise, I did it to hopefully prolong the life of the fan. That constant on/off thing isn't good for the electronics.
