    No, that is impossible.

The desktop Core 2 Duos (Conroe) use 65W of power, and use socket T.

The mobile Core 2 Duos (Merom) use 35W of power, and use socket M.

So, as pointed out here, the desktop Core 2 Duos are not compatible with the notebook Core 2 Duos by way of voltage and socket.

But there are motherboards out there that can take your laptop chip and put it into a desktop board. This would be great for HTPC. All you do is buy a new chip for your Laptop and put the old chip in the HTPC. It is what i am going to do in the next few weeks. Kill two birds with one stone.

That's cool. Is that so you can use passive cooling and keep your HTPC whisper quiet?

I would not use passive cooling just a real quiet one. This processor would need only minimal cooling so the the fan you would use can be a the quietest you can get

What do you think would work with passive cooling and still be able to show full fps 1280x720 or even 1920x1080 video, if anything? I recall one of the P4 cores was really cool, right? P4 Northwood maybe?

Although I suppose if you put a slow 120mm fan on a Merom it wouldn't be louder than any PSU you could get...
