I gave my daughter my Averatec computer but it doesn't connect correctly wirelessly at her home and I just cant' figure out why.

She is connected with an "excellent" strength but when you open a web page you get an error page, as if there is no connection at all. I've tried repairing, but that hasn't change the situation.

She is using the notebooks built in wireless feature.

As an aside, I used a wireless PC card when signals weren't strong enough to pick up with the built-in wireless card. The software is still installed so the card can be used when needed. However, we never had this problem when we used either of the wireless features, so I don't think a conflict is causing the current problem.

My son-in-law thinks I has something to do with the IP address, but I believe that was changed when I did a repair. It's Windows XP.

Any suggestions for a fix would be much appreciated.

Keep in mind, just like it takes two to tango, it takes two devices to make a wireless connection. Your daughter should also look at her router settings.

Is it safe to assume other computers can currently connect wirelessly to her router?

Is the router secured? If so, how, and has she tried manually setting up the connection within XP? Open up Network Connections, right-click on the wireless adapter and select the Wireless Networks tab. Then manually Add the connection with the appropriate properties.

First check in the command by type cmd on the run menu.
In the script type: ipconfig /all then enter
find out your ip address first: example: 69.122.25.133
    if no show ip address
then type: ipconfig /release then enter
    after show 0.0.0.0.
then type ipconfig /renew then enter
it should bring your orginal ip address back
then close the tap X on the right corner.
Now try to click your Internet explorer,,should work
If is not work, then disable your wireless adapter by clicking right click, then restart your computer then enable your wireless again, should work.
    Good Luck!

Yes, other computers are working successfully. The router is secure.

My son-in-law evidently fixed the problem; don't know how.

Thanks everyone for the very detailed and helpful info!
