What's your GPU? Might want to bump that 1gb to 2. Close out unnecessary programs that might be running in the background, if possible, don't be online at the same time so you shut down your anti-viral software as well.

I play oblivion on my HGL30 with the GPU at its underclocked speed and one gig of 533 ram, and I do not experieince any stutter or pauses. I would say I have the graphics at a medium to high range, with distant LOD on and interior shadows.

This problem must be software related(memory eating background processes, spyware, viruses) , provided your laptop is in good condition. The GPU in a HGL30 is a nvidia 7600 with 256 ram, which is defantely no slouch, even when at 350/350.

Make sure you have the latest oblivion patch, as I found my fps out doors went up 5-6 fps after applying it. as well, go through the oblivion.ini (located in my documents/games/oblivion folder) and turn on all the effects labeled 'threading' as this will make oblivion use both cores on your CPU when it can, which CAN help improve performance.

As well, make sure HDR or bloom isn't on. Although the HGL is a pretty speedy computer, HDR is pretty hard on the GPU.

Yeah it must be software. Make sure oblivion and your video drivers are up to date. I have the same setup as you almost (gpu still underclocked though) and don't get any stuttering.

it's all in the ram man!!! :) get another gig an you will never have any probs again, ram's fairly cheap right now, around 160 bucks a gig, correct me if im wrong, the ram market is like gold is on the stock market, always going up an down.

I don't play Oblivion--but have heard of things like the grass settings and also creature settings that can cause a few problems.

There are fixes for the creatures--to make their footfalls silent. That may or may not help you.

I had significant problems with Oblivion with creature footstep sounds. I had to open up Wolves in the TES editor and turn off the footstep noise to get fps to not go through the floor every time one showed up.

You might try one of those codec packs or something... if movies are doing the same thing it might be some audio or video codec... I'd be especially suspicious of the audio ones. Oblivion seems kinda flakey that way.

I have noticed that when I use the on board sound, the game stutters randomly every 5-10 seconds. If i do a fresh restart, remove as many applications as possible, and run it, it dosent stutter at all. If i use a external sound card, it dosent stutter.

I have tried disabling my virus checker, Notebook hardware control, msn, turning off RTHDCPL (program for the realtek sound card), turning off footsteps, updating the sound drivers, and using software 3d audio in oblivion to fix it, but none of that works... to say its odd is an understatement.

woah woah, back up yer horse there. it looks like you have bloom lighting on... go into the game, and press ~, then press TDT and repost your screens (this will provide FPS) On my computer I cannot have Bloom on and have good FPS... are you?
