I'm wondering if this is a good idea to get a refurbished Averatec for $979. It's the P4 3 Gigahertz Radeon 9600 64 MB dedicated version. I really want a laptop that can handle some games, but I'm really low on cash. from what I've seen and read, this laptop seems to be able to handle its share of games. Can anyone give me a second opinion?
Good for games? Bad for games? Average?
By the way, I'm thinking of running games like command and conquer Generals, warcraft 3, and starcraft.
Thanks

This laptop has more than enough power to run these games. It will even handle doom 3 okay !
Hope this helps -
I've played command and conquer generals zero hour and kotor 2 The sith lords and it runs smooth as silk. If you have extra cash buy a gig of ram, you'll notice the difference in speed.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll get the new 2.8 Ghz unit over the refurbished 3.0 Ghz unit then. I'll also get a cooling pad thingie cuz I was reading the other threads and they said it had a problem with overheating.
P.S
Is an eMachines with an AMD athlon 3000+ and 60 gigabyte hard drive 4200 rpm, 512 ram, ATI 9600 64 MB integrated graphics as good/ better than this averatec?
Thanks a lot

speed wise they are about the same but the amd 64bit has an advantage over the pentium 4. The amd will ready for Longhorn when it comes out, because Longhorn is supposed to be 64 bit compared to 32 bit for XP. It's up to you, if you want to buy the 6100 now or wait but by the time Longhorn comes out Intel will already release a 64 bit version of their chip. Good luck on your purchase.

althon is better for gaming (compared to 2.8ghz and 3.0ghz) and the emachine has better battery life but I think it is like 100 more.. im not sure

You are right athlon's are better for gaming, I'm happy with this notebook and the games that I play run pretty good on this notebook. If you really want a computer for gaming build your self a desktop.

this laptop is pretty good for some games. even for these new games that are coming out. i tried star wars republic commando and it ran fairly well. i played many games on this laptop like morrowind, kotor 1 & 2, nba live 2005, madden 2005, half-life 2, freedom force, and a few other games and they all ran good. the games that you mentioned, it will run w/o a hitch. but it does get pretty hot after about 20 mins of gaming. but it isnt a big deal.

If you want to cool your notebook down while playing games. Follow these steps.
1. get a notebook cooling pad
2. get more ram, i have 1.2 gig in mine and it run's faster and cooler( not accessing the HD as much).
3. follow the directions of Ubercam to clean your 6130hs.
You'll have a notebook running not as warm.

I am selling my Averatec AV6130HS for $800-$850. Only owned for about 3 months. Like new condition with retail box and original recovery dvds. The labtop works good with games and nice for movies too. I don't need a labtop anymore because I just got myself a desktop. If interested - Please email me at [email protected] for info.

$979 sounds a little high for a refurbished. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get one new for not much more. After my last refurbished Compaq I vowed never to get refurbished again. Go**** keys kept coming loose, the mute button never worked and the wireless indicator light also never worked. Minor stuff I know, but you're really expecting a newer, flawless feeling computer when you get refurbished, not one that feels USED.
