Hi folks. I finally took the plunge and replaced my dvd/cd drive. Since I was so leery of doing this, I fugured others may be in that same place too. So I want to tell you how it went so you might be encouraged. I plan to attach photos, so you can see how easy it was. I have an Averatec 6130-hs which originally came with a lite-on sdw-431s. I replaced it with a Pioneer dvr-k15 which I purchased on line from 4reseller.com, for $88 including shipping. It came with absolutely nothing but the drive itself.
My initial issue is that my combo unit stopped recognizing blank media. It would read a disk that had already been recorded.
My first fear of replacing it was that it would not look right, or latch in properly. The good news is that things in laptops are not so proprietary as they once were.
The first photo shows the connection extender which must be taken from the old unit. Two long screws must be removed.
Then the outer frame-like thing must be removed. Four small screws must be removed. this piece contains the parts necessary to latch the unit into your laptop. the last part to be removed would be the face plate. this would take two screws, and the release of three plastic latches. Although I did that, I put it back once I saw that it would not fit onto the new one. If you use another drive, it may work. I had wanted to do that, so I could maintain the original look. As it turns out, it looks ok with the face plate which came with the pioneer. See the last photo. The unit is rcessed somewhat, but I think it looks nice.
The unit works great. Windows xp recognized and installed it with no problem. I did a complete backup of my hard drive using Norton Ghost. It went much faster. This unit will burn dvd's at 8x.

Great stuff ... was it obvious how to open the case to get to the point where you started to remove the dvd drive?

Actually I didn't have to do open up anything. The combo drive on the 6130 (which I think is a more common way to do it now) is mounted into an interchangeable bay. You could slide out the combo drive and put in another hard drive. I know some laptops allow you to put a spare batterey there, but I'm not sure about the Averatec. I'll attach a photo which shows the bottom view. the latch is near the foot closest to your point of view. Just to your right is the handle to draw it out with. That is part of the thin frame which was removed and transfered to the new one. It is easier to see in my middle photo of my previous post. Rex.

Ah! ... it was a modular device ... definitely makes life a lot easier!
They are not so in the 3250s.

Nice pics, and description!
I did this a month or so after I got the 6130. Replaced the stock CD/RW with a DVD/RW slot loader ( i didn't like the tray popping outagainst the power plug).
Easy and quick change out, perfect operation.
