I was looking around the board a while back and saw someone with the el80 that had the crown version. in the picture the s-video out port had a special cable connected in it turning the 7pin port into an s-video and composite output with L/R audio ports as well. I was wondering if that was a product specific to that version, do you need to get the tv turner as well or if that part was ment for the tv turner but plugged in the wrong port at the time of the picture being taken?

if it is just a normal part that should ship with the compal laptop alone (or the ports it creates work anyway) i would like to get it and is there anyone who knows where I might beable to buy that part?

i tried to find the picture but was unable to find it. i cant remember the topic it was under when i saw it last.

    thanks

any standard S-video port does not output audio signals, only video. That plug would have to be for the TV tuner if it's anywhere in the laptop. I used to have a plug like that for a desktop ATI radeon card. It didn't use a standard S-video, it used a 9 pin connector. You can buy a S-video to composite converter, and composite to S-video converter at radioshack (aka 'the source'.. retarded name)

I under stand that a standard s-video does not output anything more then just the picture but having looked around more i actually found the picture i was talking about on the site i bought my laptop from, xoticpc. it wasnt coming out of the tv tuner card since it was on the back of the laptop and not on the side.

this is the pic i was talking about http://www.xoticpc.com/laptop/32956.jpg
    and the actual page http://www.xoticpc.com/web/images/3295.htm

dunno if they will work or not but if not then basicly get to the hel80 page and just click on the first gallery tab, near the bottom of the page is the pic.

its not much of a big deal its just that if this is an actual part it would make connecting the audio up to my tv easier then using a headphone to rca cable.

    thanks

my el80 does not have the tuner card (it doesn't even incorporate the minipci-e slot for the tuner card). from what I remember when I took it apart, there isn't any audio wires or the like going to the s-video port. just video, coming out of the graphics card etc. but i can't say for sure as I wasn't looking too closely and the pictures I took during don't show the place too well.

Perhaphs some of the resellers might shed some more light on this.

If I get a chance latter today I'll try and hook it up using the cable shown in the pic to my tv and see if it transmits audio.

I'm not sure why they have a plug with that many outputs, but I am 150% sure that S-Video jacks do NOT output an audio signal by any means. If the plug had say, an extra 2 pins, allowing for an S video cable as well as a proprietary cable, I would understand (and I think that would be just cool).

In this case however, S video ONLY outputs a video signal, and does NOT output audio. Maybe they used a beta computer on those photos, and have changed it around for retail, or vice versa.

The photo shows the digital antenna that comes with the TV tuner. With the tuner, you also get a cable like the one in the photo.

Looks to me as if somebody simply plugged the cable into the wrong port for the purposes of the photo.

s-video is just the video source.
if your laptop has SPDIF.then check to see if you have optical sound from the earphone jack....

my laptop does have the optical out via the headphone jack. the only problem with it is that i dont have anything with an optical auido in port.

also with vista right now i have been loosing some of my audio, which is why finding out if this will work for doing audio it would make it so much easier then the headphone jack.

How do you get optical sound from the ear phone jack? Do you need some type of adapter?

IF your laptop supports it, you need a connector called a toslink adaptor. The optical light only turns on when you have the said plug in your computer. Make sure you have the capability before you buy one.

I just tried hooking up the adapter the way it was in the pic that the OP posted. I couldn't get any audio out of it, nor was I able to get composite video out. So I am assuming that the breakout cable is for the TV tuner only because it works fine with the TV Tuner. The only question I have now is that if the port in the back right is just S-video why is it not a standard 4 pin svideo. The extra pins must be for something.
