yeah I just bought the IFL90 but wonder if it support XP or not. Is the driver disc support both XP and Vista Driver?

I'm just gonna use XP though cause it's not the right time to use Vista yet.

Another question: Does the barebone lids comes with a glossy black finish or a regular plastic finish like Dell B130?

There are drivers for XP included with the CD. I installed my XP partition all with the CD's drivers. The only ones I got from the internet were display drivers.

The IFL-90 does work with Windows XP. I'm on my Sager NP2090 with Windows XP SP2 right now.

Driver support is better in Vista, I am running XP and there has been some struggle to get thinks to work. Most Compal Utilities won't work in XP...just Vista, and mostly Vista64.
Glossy finish depends on what resolution you got...wxsga+ would be matte by now.

Driver support better in Vista? That doesn't make much sense. There should still be a plenty of driver support for XP. Finding XP drivers for desktop hardware is still easier than locating ones for Vista. I find it difficult to believe the same is true with laptops. Maybe in another year things will turn around.

Mind you, I haven't tried installing Vista on a laptop yet (I will on my Asus soon), and maybe the Compal IL90 is an exception. It is true that Vista comes with more drivers built into the OS. However, that doesn't mean those drivers work better than analogous ones on XP.

Oh yeah, I generally don't install all those software utilities companies include with new PCs.

This laptop was built with the intention of the main platform being Vista, so it does make sense that Vista will have more driver support.

i was under the impression that you had to slipstream the drivers for the sata controller chip onto the xp installation disk to even get it to find the harddrive

If AHCI is turned off in the BIOS, XP installs fine. (AHCI was turned off by Sager on my laptop, by the way.)

If AHCI is turned on in the BIOS, then you definitely need to slipstream the SATA drivers onto your installation disk or use some method to allow the installation process to find those drivers (e.g. put them on a floppy... but who has a floppy drive on a new laptop?).

By the way, AHCI can be turned on an off in the BIOS by yourself at a later date if the need arises. However, if XP has been installed with AHCI turned off and you just turn AHCI on, XP won't be able to boot anymore. You need to install the SATA drivers on XP *before* turning AHCI on and installing those drivers on a system which is already running is an entire can of worms let me tell ya. (Google for Windows XP AHCI and you'll see.)

I do not know what AHCI gives you.
