hi all. i am going to get a laptop a month from now and i'm seriously having my eyes set on the Xplorer X5-5850 from cyberpowerpc since it looks like a pretty decent gaming notebook for a cheap price. but i have heard that the build quality on some of the cyberpowerpc notebooks are cheap and that the service/support is ABYSMAL. not like i really care about service or support (at least i shouldn't if the pc is doing what it's supposed to do  )

SO my question to you all is if i really should go ahead with the buy. if not, can you hint me towards any other performance laptops (minimum core 2 duo T7100, 2 gigs of ram & nvidia 8600GS) for under $900? (the xplorer 5850 can be customized to under $900 if you choose the "no operating system" option)

    tia

well.. cyberpower does not build notebooks.. they buy the barebones from compal and msi and install the components (processor, ram, hd, wireless, etc.).

i don't have first hand experience with them, but pretty much all of their complaints are with the desktops they DO build and apparently bad customer service.

you should be fine with a notebook from them.

you could always use Buyxg.com.. sub company of Cyberpower.. they use Cyberpower to build their notebooks and do their paperwork.. they have a better reputation than Cyberpower directly.

just know that you're taking a risk with these "cheaper" companies

again.. notebooks should be no problem

most people get good stuff, but if you're the unlucky one to have a problem, it could become a nightmare. if not then you get one hell of deal.

I just ordered that laptop from them just now with coupon "myspace" for $30 off

I guess I can tell you how it is when I get it (the site testimonials lead me to believe that it will be several weeks until I get it, but I don't mind that much)

I would really advise against it. I thought the same thing. I read a lot of bad things about their desktop computers, but they don't make their laptops. I have read great things about the Compal FL90 (I don't remember what Cyberpower model number it was) so I figured I'd be good to go. The problem is if you happen to have an issue, their service is HORRIBLE. The 24/7 support is a complete lie. You cannot reach anyone after hours, and even during work hours I would literally wait on hold for hours, wait for days for responses, and eventually filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Attorney General's office. That finally got them to replace my laptop after 5 months. Now I am having new problems. I am 12.5 months into this. They have eaten 5 months of my 12 month warranty away, and I am stuck with a laptop that will not turn on.

Cyberpower has a nasty rep, I would look at some other small boutiques instead. Try IBuyPower, they are nearly identical and may be a subsidiary, but they have a better general reputation than Cyperpower and offer everything from sub-$500 lappys to $3000 9800M SLI systems built on Clevo barebones. Now that it is past the holiday season, service should be better. They are a small company and get overwhelmed near the end of the year with the mad dash to XMas. I've owned one of their desktops in the past and have a friend that has both a lappy and desktop from them and swears by their work.

If you are willing to put more money into it, look at places like XoticPC. Just read up on any vendor before buying them and stick to more recent reviews. A company may have had problems a couple years ago, but they could be top notch now... vise versa applies as well.

XoticPC is where it's at for custom laptops folks. Good BBB record, supreme customer service, and the owner is very active on these forums even.

    Go Xotic.
