So im cruising along on my Hel80 with its 2GHz dual core processor working at 0-5% and SUDDENLY for no reason it shoots up to around 20% and stays there until i reboot, the weird thing is that if i look at the processes then it tells me that 99 % of the CPU is free yet at the bottom of the page it says that 20 o so percent is being used, this is even if i am not running any programs! i¨ve tried disabling processes at random but without succes, and for some reason this phenomenon only seems to want to use the processing power of CPU1, the most annoying part of this is that when working with audio apps and playing live virtual synths i run in to problems (pops and clicks) with the audio being processed fast enough, but these problems only seem to occur when this weird phenomenon is takeing place,

if anybody can tell me what is going on and how to make it stop, i woulb be ridiculously happy :)

(i have attached screenshots of processor usage)

I'd recommend a quick call to your tech support. They may be able to answer this question for your or help you locate the source of this CPU-power thief.

I'll tell you what it is. You haven't got that check box at the bottom checked. In English, it should mean "show processes for all users".

That should show you the missing processes, and among them should be the one using 20% of your CPU.

i set my XP up for dual coredness and this weird phenomenin still persists, the strange thing however is that when i change the power scheme in speedswitch it suddenly starts behaving again but then 20 mins or so later its back to misbehaving and as soon as i switch power scheme (to any other scheme) it behaves again, even if im not running speedswitch it will start to misbehave after 20 or so mins and then when i start speedswitch and change settings it behaves again. Weird ? any tips ?

I think it may be related to whatever causes my headphone noise. That's just a random idea though. It doesn't have any of the usual stuff behind it, like "knowledge", or "evidence".

It really is weird. Doesn't sound like a rootkit.

hmm, i don't think this is caused by a hotfix as the problem starts upon fresh install of the OS even with automatic updates turned off...

Download a program called "process explorer" and view all the background stuff that is using up the cpu. You'll probably notice that it is from the DPC (deferred procedure call) that is using all that process. It is related to a hardware driver issue and after researching the problem without finding a resolution it is most likely related to the videoport or possibly acpi or usb.

I can't seem to solve this problem. What video driver are you using? I'm using the 97.xx from laptopvideo2go. I'm going to go back to the one on the cd and see how that goes.
