    my computer shut down funny once (had to press and hold). now when i log in, a dialog box comes up with an exclamation point with two choices- 'yes' or 'no.' what is this? or better yet, how do i get rid of this?

    here is some more info-
    when i log in as administrator it has the exclamation point and asks yes/no.
    whe i log in as a limited user it has an 'i' in a bubble and just asks ok.

    ugh.

    also- it will not load until i answer the non-existent question. just yes/no or ok. no actual question... argh!

    if i log in as admin- it looks like;

    !
    yes no

    if i log in as limited user it looks like;

    i
    ok

    there is no question, just yes no or ok... weird, huh? i'm thinking yes or no WHAT?!

    also, system restore didn't help. nor did eliminating all non-system programs from msconfig. hmmmm... looks like it might be a spybot dialog- but it's all messed up. wasn't there before. ack.

    Try disabling TeaTimer and the other resident protection features of SpyBot. My experience with them have been buggish. Might be what's causing this weird popup.

    hehe. maybe it is spybot. i've turned all the spybot stuff i could find off, even with autorun. still does it. how annoying.

    oh, and this is xp. not vista, i would expect this kind of thing from vista. man this bugs the hell out of me...

    have you actually uninstalled spybot, i would def try that rather than simply turning it off.

    could be a virus, i suppose. but i was not on the interweb the day the problem began. it started when my computer froze when going to sleep, forcing me to hold the power button to power off. then when i rebooted- ack. i have scanned with spybot, adaware, and avast.

    Did you try a safe boot?
    If it's a controller/driver/specific sw issue it should not be there on vga/safe mode.
    If you install Windows Defender you can check all your startup and current programs and processes with certain level of detail (once you install go check Software Explorer in Contro Panel).
    That should help debugging.

    Yep...seems like. There are tools out there to debug all boot and startup activity, maybe tou can look for such.
    Investing too much time troubleshooting might not worth it though...reformat is like giving up, but faster solution.

    1.12. checked the settings, nothing going on there. no dual boot. i am trying to figure out procmon (from sysinternals) well enough to figure out what process is opening the window. yikes. i just think that ONE of the virus scanners i used would have caught something if it were a virus... the search continues!
