than a desktop. these drivers are god aweful!!! ever since version 8.7 hotfix all i get is bsod or no xfire with my dual 4870x2's.. ive been fighting with these drivers forever and always end up back with 8.7 because everything else just blue screens on me.. just tried 8.12 instant reboot cycle and bsod.. im a bit worried about the ati drivers...

well the last thing i tried worked. finally i (after 2 days worth of fighting with 8.12) removed every ati service from startup. it works. now im reading more about this all over the net. its the ati service that loads at startup crashing vista..

so if you load 8.12 and have xfire on the whitebook or desktop and get either bsod after the orb before vista starts or you get a constant reboot. reboot into safe mode. go to your services. go to ati external event monitor and set it to disabled. viola it works vista starts and xfire is enabled now.. no bsod

ATI has so much potential, their hardware is bulletproof.. But their software and drivers absolutely are horrid. I think one of the problems is they attempt to port driver catalogs to newer cards and forget about the cards they released 2, 3, or 4 months ago. On the bright side, they still haven't released a driver for the mobility 3870s, M88 chipset. So either we have a nice suprise coming.. Or they forgot about us all together. I have a feeling the 9.01 driveris gonna blow us all away. Hell, at least the 8.12 desktop resolved some of our problems. Gotta hold our breath for just one more month!

my whole point is though for anyone getting a bsod its being caused by the ati service starting with windows set that to disabled and everything works fine. and you can still use xfire and everything it just takes like maybe 15 seconds to start after windows instead of being started with windows

Are these new services installed with 8.12, or artifacts from previous driver installs (did you use driver cleaner)?

anything higher than 8.7 has blue screened for me and this is why and this is part of the driver. not the control center.

basically what happens is this allows the pair of cards to already be installed when windows boots. without this one service and the reason it takes about 15 seconds to see it in the system tray is because you are forcing vista to install the driver each time it starts on its own.

this fix is for vista only and 32 and 64 bit versions

Why is ATI being so lazy with releasing new and updated drivers for this rig?
I really love it's potential but like typical ATI fashion they are shunning support for all there customers who spent a lot of $$$ on there systems!
I just don't get it, that's the only thing holding me back to actually purchase one for somebody.
