haven't tested any 3d games or 3dmark06 yet.

EDIT: it seems they finally fixed windows xp standby resume bug for me. I am able to wake up my laptop normally from standby mode.

I've done a couple bios updates before, but I totally forgot how to do them. Can someone post instructions so I don't brick my laptop?
    Thanks.

Just download the first link that masterbw posted, burn the iso, reboot and let the flasher do is thing. The laptop will shutdown by itself. Turn it on and bam you'll be at version 1.18  .

You can use Ayle's advice, or if you have an external floppy drive, here's the "traditional" method.

For a floppy, download Bootdisk.com's Driver-free disk image:
    ftp://ftp.veracomp.pl/mirror/abit/pub/download/utilities/drdos/drdflash.exe

Run this .EXE with a blank floppy in your external drive, then extract the BIOS flash file to the floppy.

PLUG IN YOUR LAPTOP'S AC ADAPTER

Boot off of the floppy (press F12 as you first turn on the notebook to bring up the boot menu, and select the USB floppy from the list).

Once you have a DOS prompt, type in the following and press enter:
    jfl92118

    This will flash your BIOS.

Zfactor, what are the temps of your t7700? I'm thinking about getting a new cpu, but I don't want to risk frying my system with penryn.... And the t7700 is fairly cheap.

just updated. works. temps are the same for me (as with version 1.12). it does seem to wake from sleep/hibernation faster, though.

    Hello Gang,

I'm new to this site, but so far have found the wealth of information here to be very helpful and the user's very knowledgeable. It's great to know that there are sites like this out there that help support the laptop toting user's like me.

In regards to the latest version of the JFL92118 BIOS update... I don't want to turn my notebook into an expensive brick so I wanted to ask if anyone knows for sure if this BIOS update is compatible with a Compal JFL92 model notebook. I see no reference to that specific model in the release notes (IFT00REL.TXT) for this version (heck compal.com doesn't even list this model) but see many people in this thread saying good things about the update on their various models of notebooks. My laptop is actually an OCZ DIY 15.4 which is the JFL92 with a nifty sticker on it. Has anyone updated the JFL92 from BIOS v1.16 to v1.18 successfully?

One thing I did notice is that in the text file K20ARELS.TXT the model of my notebook is listed -but- the revision number is v0.03 with a date of 01/02/07. Maybe I am just not knowledgeable enough yet about how Compal does it's model numbering and revisions.

I'm hoping this BIOS update does something about the extreme temps that I get on the GPU and this will help regulate the fan better. I'm currently running my laptop with a fan sitting next to it. This seems to drop the temps by about 15 degrees C. Has anyone noticed this BIOS update improving their temps?

    Thanks!

Welcome to NBR. I have been using 118 since masterbw posted the bootable cd flash. (Thank you masterbw, it sure is an easy way to flash, is 119 coming soon?) Before that it was 116 when I got it. My laptop configuration is in my signature. I've not had a heat issue with mine, but I did use Artic Silver to remount the heat sink.

Thanks I will try it. Using Nero and other progs, when I boot up with the CD, I only get a blinking cursor...system never gets to Windows. Would it be best if I tried the USB key option? (although I dont think I saw it as an option to boot from that when I pressed F12)...

imgburn usually works well for this, and it's free. It's very likely what I used when I burned my 1.16 BIOS CD. (Hmm... perhaps I should update to 1.18 someday...)

OK! I updated successfully my bios from 1.07 to 1.18 using the CD ISO. By upgrading the BIOS, I was now able to use 4GB of RAM instead of only 2. In addition, I was only able to successfully burn the CD using 1x speed. Otherwise it always failed cuz my combo drive sucks!

Only question: how come my Vista Rating stayed at 4.5??? I expected the Memory Operations category rating to increase to a better score but it remained the same despite my doubling the RAM from 2GB to 4GB!

vista can not "see" 4gb of ram. it tells you its there but if you are using vista 32 bit it can not address 4gb on the fl92 its just over 3gb that can be used..
