    i've a zenith (director) model laptop,recently i've changed its dvd drive now i've checked in bios the secondery IDE is disable it means xp cd can't be boot from cd drive,i've done many setting but unable to fix this problem,and currunt transfer mode is PIO, i've changed new dvd is, HL-DT-ST DVDRAM-t40L

    Zenith still makes laptops? I had a Zenith Z-181. Loved it.

    It appears that the optical drive shares the same IDE channel as the HDD, in which case the master / slave / cable selection setting of the optical drive (which is in the firmware) becomes important. One work-around may be to put a jumper on the HDD to make it the slave.

    Regarding the PIO mode (often caused by reading problems on the optical drive), remove the IDE channel in Device Manager and then reboot the computer. When Windows reinstalls the channel it usually gets the speed correct.
