Does anyone know where we could get the new modems?

    Just found this.

The new chips, now shipping to OEMs with modules available through Novatel Wireless and Sierra Wireless, are based on Qualcomm’s MDM9600 and MDM 9200 3G/4G wireless modems, and as the company notes, have been specially designed for deployment in devices utilizing Snapdragon dual-core and quad-core processors. In addition to HSPA+, dual-carrier HSPA+, and LTE support, the Gobi 4000 platform is also backwards compatible with HSPA and EV-DO. On top of a possible variant of the chip coming to a future 4G LTE iPad, the Gobi 4000 platform will also be included in Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops, and Dell’s Latitude E6420 laptops, in addition to other Windows and Android powered mobile devices.

I heard about this! I cannot WAIT to get my hands on one of these suckers! I have 4G service with AT&T but only a 3G card.

My 3G on AT&T is so freakin fast on 3G (like 6+ MEG/650k download off internet), I can't even to begin to fathom how fast the 4G will be!!

Toyo, do you nave a link for any more info? Thanks

Some of the newer Toughbooks are future proofed with LTE compatible antennae, so you might be successful modding in an LTE chip.

Technical rant: Technically speaking, LTE is 3.9G as it falls just short of the criteria to call it 4G, whatever marketing people might like to say.

"Meh, just round it off to 4. It sounds better. Nobody will notice." Marketing dept last week.

    "Doh!" Marketing dept. today.

The "Committee on Who Can Call Their Service 4G" or COWCACA for short, lowered the standards so now anything faster than 3G is 4G.

Yeah, in short, everybody except Sprint got together and decided it was cheaper to buy off politicians to pressure the FCC and the standards people than to ACTUALLY upgrade their networks. Now they can keep using their crappy 15-year-old hardware and still call it 4G, cuz EVERYBODY WANTS 4G.

If it isn't CLEAR, it's 4G LiTE. And just like your favorite beer, watering it down and doubling the BS still doesn't make it taste any better. What REALLY pisses me off is that Apple STILL hasn't released a CLEAR-compatible iPwn. I think they're afraid to let people see the difference in a side x side comparison.

Meh. LTE is significantly better then HSPA, my earlier comment was just technical pedantry.

While the US govt can label LTE what ever it likes, pretty much everyone globally will call LTE 4G. Fine with me - it's pretty much the fourth generation of wwan!

Well, yeah, I suppose. As long as you don't count WiMax, which was there 6 years earlier, is still getting faster and can handle 100x as much load per node. Oh, and if it weren't for them creating the pressure, everybody else would STILL be trying to tell us there's NO WAY we can make it any faster than EVDO/3G.

Remember the ones who got us here. ;)

Rob, I don't have anymore info. I got an email from a supplier stating that they were released. After that, I read some news on Engadget that Sierra Wireless and GOBI just released new cards, so I am not even sure which one they went with.

I don't really care what they my broadband service. When I hit 15 D/L and 13 U/L speeds with LTE I am one happy camper.

You do realize that the current standard since 2005 for WiMax is 40/20 for mobile users, and 128/56 for stationary, right? And the new standard, deploying this year, is 1Gb Stationary and 100Mb mobile? And most carriers, in over 80 countries, include 3G coverage as backup in their data plans?

We like to think we have the newest and bestest because we're the BLEEPing U-S of A, but truth is in this kind of technology most of the rest of the world is far ahead of us. Carriers over here have always had the "Spend nothing on upgrade, milk every deployment for all you can before you even THINK about the next deployment" attitude. In other parts of the world, they're a little bit... hungrier. So they're actually trying to get new business. Many cities in 3rd world nations have better wireless infrastructure than we do in Silicon Valley.

Yes, I realize this is the U-S of A. The point is?
Yes, I want a faster mobile connection. The problem is?
Yes, I realize that we are not getting the "official" 4G speed. As long as I continue to get speeds like this I am happy. You can call it G for all I care.
Yes, I relalize that the USA is not the tops in some forms of technology. I am also aware that I am free to walk down any street of my choice in this Country. We cannot say that for other places that might have faster connections. For this is a great example of why I enjoy and am so proud to get up and go to work everyday for the freedom that our country stands for. I respect you tremendously, but it's like I tell the one's that try to spit in my face, yell about how this country sucks, while I am clicking the cuffs that ends there life as they know it forever. I simply tell them they should have left this place alot longer ago if they didn't like it.

As you can tell I am not in a very good mood this morning
