I recently got a CF29LQ off of tigerdirect.
I'm pleased with its overall construction, however...
According to the program I downloaded "Notebook Hardware Control", my CPU sits at about 50c idle, 90c under load. I know these temps are very unhealthy.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a different temperature monitoring program, so I can know for sure that my temps are this high?
If I have to, how bad is it to pry into the Toughbook? I'm a pretty competent worker with hardware, although most of the stuff I work on involves tube circuitry.![]()
I know you can go through and replace the thermal pads with new Fujipoly pads + Arctic Silver paste if required...I'm just wondering how tough it is to do.
Thanks for your help!

Removing the bottom to get to the heat sink is rather simple. I will repeat a bit of advise that has been given many times. You don't need the paste with the thermal pad. The pads are all that is necessary. Paste alone is NOT enough to fill the 1.XX mm gap

you can check out ifixit for the cf-29, I know there are flaws with it in calling the hard drive bay the battery bay and vice versa. but the pictures take a little of the anxiety out of making the first attempt or the first few anyway. the fujipoly that you can get from whomever, got mine from frozencpu.com, and someone else did a heatpipe mod that he packed some of the heat pad material along the heatpipe(in the MP bay area) that might help additionally with keeping things cooler. many times the original material can be re-rolled and pressed out for the cpu and video chip(i presume). but if brittle replace with new thermal pad material. I've noticed with cputhermometer.com program temps don't change so you have to reboot and start program over again to see the temps more accurately, hope this helps........Driller

I've been very pleased with the thermal pad replacements I've done. If memory serves you have two thicknesses seeing as how it's a Mark 4.. What's that other thing called deere a gpu??? That would take 1.0 (in my machines it's red)and the cpus (2) take 1.5mm. You may be able to get away with smooshing the old pads "gently" together. If they are broken and dried out Fujipoly will replace 'em. Some also muck about with the heat dissipation rods. I haven't done that yet.
1. Open ram cover. Pull extra ram and copper shield out.
2. Un-plug the speaker with forceps or something.
3. Un-screw a bunch of screws. 2 sizes.
4. Gently pry a corner of the lid up. Pull the screws you missed.
5. Replace pads, blow out any dust.
6. Reverse. Don't forget the speaker. Black wire towards ram.
P.O.C. (Definitely worth the time) Fujipoly Premium System Builder Thermal Pad - 1/4 Sheet - 150 x 100 x 1.5 - Thermal Conductivity 6.0 W/mK - FrozenCPU.com
