HI All,
Happy 4th to you. I have a question about 7200 RPM drives. Have you noticed a decrease of battery operation time with these fast drives? It seems reasonable that they would use more power than the normal 5400 RPM drives.
Also, is there any way to adapt to SCSI drives with my CF-29. I doubt it but you guys often work miracles.

Well, it is possible to attach an external SCSI drive using an Adaptec 1480 card in the PC card slot (assuming a CF-29 has one), but that interface is so slow that a USB SATA drive would probably be faster. (It is not possible to put one inside.) Did you have a particular reason for wanting to put a SCSI drive on your system?

That is a mixed question; the 7200 RPM PATA drives we used to seek out as a speed upgrade were a couple generations newer than the 4200 RPM drives they replaced; they benefited from more efficient motors and lower rotational mass, making them often a MORE efficient upgrade.
The 5400 RPM models NOW on the market are the latest generation of PATA drives; they are generally more efficient than either. Also equipped with faster heads and large Cache RAM, they can often be nearly as fast as the 7200 RPM models we once prized so greatly AND draw less power.

HI Dave and mnememth,
Thanks for your replies. Concerning the SCSI question, I have been web researching drive updates and noticed that notebook SCSI drives are available. This was a surprise. My interest is based on my use of SCSI drives on desktops and their obvious speed improvement over IDE drives. Apple got this one right. But the flip side is SCSI drives (15,000 RPM) have always been much more expensive and smaller than IDE drives. I did not expect to be able to actually install one in my CF-29. But, you never know...
As for the 7200 RPM drive question, my historic time line was messed up. I thought the 7200 drives were the most recent. But my research indicated the IDE version is basically no longer available. Some web sites still list them but they are all out of stock. Hitachi does not list any in their drive lineup. This confirms your answer. I will go with a 5400 drive. The prices are very attractive. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.
There is no doubt that IDE drives are quickly being replaced by SATA. As you know, the same thing is happening with desktop drives. My new home brew machine uses SATA hard drives (two 500 GB in a RAID 1 configuration), though the motherboard will also handle IDE which I use for my legacy optical drives.
Thanks Again, Sparky -
The SAMSUNG HM160HC is the best choice currently available for your cf-29
Its a 160gb ide 5400 rpm single platter drive and very fast
