My family got together and bought me a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 digital camera for Christmas. This has been billed as the "Toughbook" of digital cameras and can easily resist being submerged down to a depth of about 10 feet, but also to being dropped from a height of around 5 feet.

It is completely airtight, hence protecting the delicate electronic components within against water immersion, dust and sand.

They are know for their Lithium ion rechargeable Battery life and manage approximately 340 shots per charge.

They use SD/SDHC memory cards so I will be able to use my Toughbook to easily download the camera.

Per the sales hype "A full-featured waterproof/shockproof pocket point-and-shoot, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 is a near-perfect rugged camera for everyday use."

I am grateful to them for this and will use it to keep my family back home up to date on my status. :)

No Review yet, I am doing the obligatory 24 hour charge on my new battery! I did a lot of comparisons between it at several other "Rugged - Waterproof" cameras and this one was the best for my purposes.

I have attached my crude 6 page investigation for any that are interested. :D

It boiled down to a choice between this and the Waterproof and Dustproof Pentax Optio WS80 Digital Camera.

It is a "point-in-shoot" camera so I would guess that it would fall short of a true "cameraphiles" expectations, but like the Toughbook itself, it seems like it will work when I need it to! I expect it to be used under some pretty rough conditions.

Yeah... I have seen that camera and await your call on it. I love the ruggedness of it... But only if it takes amazing pics... Otherwise it might as well be a brick... They are rugged too but don't take good pics...
