As I finish up my spring in winter cleanup, I'm feeling the need to terminate technology Rob style, but with no strong wall handy, Im planning on an afternoon at the range.![]()
For my first activity, I cant decide between trying skeet with 2.5 IDE drives, or just lining then up on the backstop and mowing them down like bowling pins.
I also thought about maybe a penatration test module, shooting them with:
22
38
9mm
357
40
44 mag
45ACP
45LC
10mm
223
308
5.7 x 28
12 slug
Other calibers on special request, these are just what I have on hand.
Then Im going to branch out to some others, including a cf-28 and a pair CF-47s, some MPC x1000, and end with some 28 and 29 damaged lids.
Any other suggestions?
-
been told the cf-28 lid is level 3 SA - put a couple 5.56x45 M855 through one for me.....
-
M855 it is, will test that report and advise
-
12GA slug should tear a hole through anything close up but try distances on the lids and let me know
-
I have almost penetrated the cf-28 lid with only 2 shot from a .177 (4.5 mm) hw30 airgun fired at a point-blank range... 7.5 joules per shot..
a 22lr round is about 100 joules..

(interior damage)
Not so tough... -
The rifle range is seven hundred yards, but most of my stuff is SBR so I'll be a little closer.
I do have a Serbu super shorty in 12 gauge, basically a remington 870 with a pistol grip and 5 inch barrel, so a slug should be interesting, not to mention fun to hold onto. -
Most def need to end it with a 7.62x54
That's just what I would do. Not sayin' jus sayin! haha
-
OK, I will end it with the SCAR M17, 7.62, that or break out a buddies Barret M82, but that thing is almost to much.
-
Sounds like a BLAST, no really it will be a B L A S T !!!!!!
-
if ya got some tracer rounds it might ignite the magnisuem that would make a show. have fun.

Speaking from experience, the HDD skeet shoot will be a disappointment and a rather serious PITA when you have to go searching for the victim HDDs.
Even a direct, close-cluster hit at 30 yards yields only moderate damage; sometimes knocking off a few SMDs and cracking a PCB or a few dings in the platter cover. By far, the greater damage is done by their contact with the ground; 3.5" drives especially like to roll edge-on due to considerable rotational velocity from the traps. I've actually seen a couple laptop HDDs dig in or separate the PCB from launch velocity though.
For maximum explosive potential, I recommend shooting them off of fenceposts with a high-velocity round like your 7.62 NATO; set them up on edge and place a high-visibility yellow or orange paint mark at the axis of the spindle as a target. Once you get a little experience, you'll be exploding them all over the place with one or two shots like I used to do with Grand-Dad's old Enfield.

Well, not sure I can get a 106 round at Walmart, but I'll check....
And I havent played with grenades since wearing a bright blue wool cap and vacationing in Kosovo during the 1999-2000 serbian sporting season.
Not a bad suggestion as a grenade were only 10 DM on the blackmarket, while a box of 7.62 is about $32. USD. I should have stocked up. -
