So I have searched and read and not really found exactly what I'm looking for.

I have an iPhone that i jailbroke and got an app to tether it to my lappy, but the batt DRAINS the phone batt and isnt real reliable (app shuts down & such), soooooooo

Im wondering if I get an AT&T WWAN sled, can I then just pop out my sim card from my fone and into my computer and jump on the net?????

since i have the unlimited data plan for my phone, why not make good use of it, eh?

additionally, will my current "wireless ready" configuration handle 3g? and what sleds/cards would I need to take advantage of this if it were to work?

    CF-29ENKNXKM - Pentium M 1.3G LV (Centrino), 13.3Transmissive Touch XGA, 256MB,40GB,WLAN802.11b+g, WinXP,BacklitKBD,Dual Connector,WIRELESS READY, Secured HDD/Battery doors

I do this with a CF-29 MK5 sled HSDPA sled that that came with the EU730 modem. It also works in my cf-30 MK1. I did upgrade it to a faster (3.6) HP-2300 modem. I had to use the (generic watcher) for Cingular and the file for the HP modem sp36889. I also had to change isp.XXXXXXXX to wap.XXXXXXXX. I don't know if the sleds will work in the CF-29E.

These sleds are the most challenging, poorest supported, very temperamental option to get working.

What about SMS while the SIM is in the lappy? and voice calls? fax?

I know nothing about these modems. If i find an empty sled for cheap, should i jump on it? as will any modem work with the sleds? or does a sled go with each kind of modem?

It works with the GOBI 2000 in my 31. I just tried my ATT Blackberry SIM which has the full data + tethering plan. What an eye opener. ATT 3G via the GOBI is fast. Running it on or through the BB is slooooooow. I do need to reboot to get the GOBI to recognize a new sim. No hot swapping. Unless there is some GOBI utility I don't know about.

From what I have read here the cf 29 Mk5 and cf 30 sleds will NOT work with a cf 29E mk2

Ihave tried to find a suitable modem for mine cf-29 Mk5 that has the EU730 modem, but I need one that can provide hsdpa conniction to900MHz network, Ijust cant find one, can anybody here help with this problem??

The900MHz network because I live in Finland and here the faster networks work on 900/2100MHz, if Ihave understand correctly this EU730 should wor just fine in 2100network? But in my home area there are just 900MHz net, and i get just EDGE connection, this is why I am askin, thanks in edvance for some possible help.

Hmmmmm. My speeds were soso when tethering my iPhone to my lappy with Edge network.

This makes me want to try and get this modem sled deal working even more if it will be faster having the modem in the lappy as opposed to tethering. Then I can be completely wireless!!

Dunno what edge would be like. The Blackberry forces everything to go through the BB servers. Without the BB involved, 3G truly feels like broadband. iPhone should not slow you down. My kid tethers his with no issues.

    PM sent

Well I didnt have probs with mine until the free trial went out on the app and now no secure sites can b visited, which means all my email and e-ghey surfing. Im not gonna pay $15/mo to bump my data plan DOWN (im unlimited now), and sure NOT gonna pay $60 to get a lappy data plan LOL

figured this would be a nice alternative, and from what i googled last night, theres are WWAN clients that support SMS, and i would think voice calls would work too with the right software (which im afraid will be an issue??)

Good luck. I'm just gonna drop tethering on the BB and add data to the 31. If I can explain that to ATT. If this goes well I'm buying a lottery ticket.

Edit: Not only wil I not be buying a lottery ticket, I might not leave the house for a month. It took me 2 hours and 5 calls to drop the tethering plan and get the standard BB data plan back on the phone. Per ATT I have to visit a store to activate the SIM included with the 31.

Yes; and THIS is why we were not interested in trying to ghetto-fab a car cradle adapter with that insistent German fellow on that other thread.
