So I purchased what was labeled a Touchscreen CF-28 on Ebay. I've emailed the guy but I'm thinking he won't respond. The CF-28 is in brand new condition...no scratches or anything and really a nice CF-28. However I'd like the touchscreen option.

I've found a touchscreen CF-28 for parts....can I just swap out screens? Or is there something on the motherboard itself preventing this?

    Thanks

    That's actually a good question.

In the first picture is the connectors from the display on a touchscreen model (My cracked 12.1", 600MHz), and the second picture is of the motherboard connectors (In the red box, location is referenced above by the audio ports and USB)

You should be able to swap it out. What you should do for us all is post a link to the auction so we can beware of this seller. A lot of people tune in here prior to buying to get advice and such.

I am bidding on a 1Ghz parts CF-28 so that I can swap it into the GPS enabled laptop I just bought. It will work... You just need the drivers.

I have a 12" touchscreen left over from another CF-28 project. If your parts laptop doesn't come through... PM me to discuss.

The toughbook configuration page lists the CF-28 that I have as 13.3 inch Non-touchscreen SVGA.

So, if I swap a monitor from a touchscreen CF-28 onto this one will it work?

easy way too find out about ur model is go to the configurator as you did,
type ur model in then click on current model and then check around os, installed devices it will tell you exactly how ur models came out,
and answer is yes touchscreen should work fine,
but take toughbooks opinons, caus am not 100% if it has to be from the same model or any model....

I understand how the configurator works. My question is this:

    a) I know my CF-28 did _not_ come with a touch screen
    b) I see no option in the BIOS about a touchscreen

With A & B in mind my question is can I take a touchscreen from another CF-28 and install it on my unit....it sounds like from your response it will

    Thanks

I just did the same thing - bought four CF-28's that were advertised as touch screen, but they weren't. I made contact with the guy thru Craigs List, and he touted his eBay and Amazon feedback ratings. When the laptops got here, they were all in beautiful shape, but not a touch screen amongst them. I contacted him, and he offered to take them back, no problem.

But, we liked them so much that we decided to keep them.

It sure would be nice to convert mine to a touch screen! I'll be watching this thread.

i hate it when sellers say the items have all the best bells and whistles to lure people in- at least your seller was willing to work with you

    another thing with panasonic toughbooks,
my uncles when he had his cf-28 before it was upgraded to a cf-29,
it had bluetooth and wifi built in also it was visible in the bios his model number was the same as the one my mate has but it didnt have that option in the bios,
so after reading about i found out that it doesnt really matter if it is in the bios or not if it is a original part of a toughbook for a example a cisco/lucent wifi card and you insert it into ur toughbook automaticaly you will get a new option in ur bios for wifi, also works the same for gps/bluetooth......etc...

ALWAYS ASK FOR THE MODEL NUMBER! (And check it out in the configurator!)

Also... I don't think a 13" touchscreen will fit into a 12" non-touch housing. (If that is what you have.) Make sure you buy the correct screen!
