My next project is too upgrade my 80GB HDD. If I could get some info on the specs of what you guys have installed that would be very helpful. I was looking at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K00 7200RPM. If yall could lead me into the right location that would be great!

    Opinions..... Throw em at me!!!

I'm with Cap'n.... I only use Hitachi drives unless someone specifies what they want and I've never had any problems. I've installed literally hundreds of laptops hard drives.... 99% are Hitachi and the rest being Seagates. Seagates run a little hotter with a little more noise in my experience.

In my CF-30 I run the same one Cap does.... A 200GB, 7200 SATA drive. It is silent, cool and fast!

Yes hitachi drives are the sleep manufacturer that outperform many of the more popular brands. They are very well reviewed on New Egg.

Alright, So I will go with an Hitachi for sure. I just finsihed reading a comparison test against these and SSD. Of course the SSD blew them away. Do you think considering the low cost of the Sata drives Vs the SSD drives that I should wait for the prices to come down some? I would imagine they are only going to get better, and cheaper.

The regular drives are slowly going down in price
The prices on good ssd drives are probably going to come down drastically
My guess is that by next summer they will be ½ of the prices today

The trouble free slc type ssd drives made by Samsung and a few other manufacturers are quite expensive
For example I have a Samsung 32gb sata II slc type drive in my cf-30
It was about $400 , and the 64gb version is about $800

    The performance is outstanding
Boot times in comparison to the stock 5400rpm drive in wxp went from 55 sec to 35sec
And windows shutdown went from 24 sec to 14 sec

I have a 10,000rpm raptor hard drive in my desktop and the cf-30 feels a lot faster

Tom, how will a 32GB SSD drive compare to my current 80GB in regards to size? I guess I don't fully understand why the SSD are lower in GB's.

Could you show me a link of exactly which one the CF-30 takes? Please...........

My B-day is Sunday and my wife told me to get something, anything I want for my TB.

The decision to downgrade from the standard capacity of 80gb to 32gb to save some money was based on my past habits with my cf-29 using the dvd writer
I never loaded the Hitachi 7200rpm 60gb in the cf-29 over ½ full

With the cf-30 I use only about 7gb for xp and another 4 gb for applications
Downloads after they total larger than 4 gb get backed-up to a dvd

If I had decided to run vista on a ssd I would of chosen the 64gb ssd
Vista needs a lot more space than xp

    http://www.ssdstore.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=29_31&products_id=76

That’s a link to one store that has the same drive that I used
The model # for it is in my earlier post as well

I did a lot of research on the forum before making up my mind on which ssd to purchase
    Lots of good info

These drives will replace normal drives within a few years
First in the more expensive laptops and then in the mainstream models

The performance boost reminds me of going from a 4200rpm drive to 7200rpm drive

I agree, I have the 64GB-version of your drive in my CF-19, and at 1GHz it 'feels' much faster in general use than any HD-based computer I have available, including my quad core desktop with 8GB of memory. (Of course, for actual CPU-intensive stuff and graphics the latter is much faster.)
