In my CF-54 I have 2 batteries installed, the main and secondary. I noticed that the main battery shows the Total Charging Index of 85 with the health being 89%. The 2nd battery shows 12 as the Total Charging Index and the health at 90%.
Should I use my 2nd battery more often to exercise the cells? On my 30's I think I wore out some batteries prematurely by not using them enough.

Every week swap the batteries and use them so your battery will be in tip top shape.

Either that or use your Battery Recalibration every 2-3 months as directed in the manual.

I use the BRECAL but I guess I should do it more often.

Simply drain the battery during your day-day tasks and recharge it. Battery calibrator often wears the battery than usual.

That's the point! For those that can discharge their batteries during daily operation... Brecal is not needed as often.

    First of all,
Are the batteries the same? Can they be swapped?
My guess is that they are different so swapping is out.

The BIOS determines which battery is discharged first. The CF31 is reverse of the CF30 with both having 2 batteries. At least recharging is reverse.
So unless you completely discharge both batteries the cycle count is always going to be different. The cycle count does not change until the battery is completely discharged.
Complete cycling is not that important in modern Lithium Ion batteries. Complete cycling did matter with Ni Cad technology.
Exercising the batteries is much more important than complete discharges.

On a CF31/CF30/CF29, the 2nd battery has much smaller cells and thus would have a shorter life span.

Contrary to popular belief, battery recalibration does NOTHING to increase the life of a Lithium battery.
The only thing battery re calibration does is reset the BIOS/Windows battery meter to match the battery.
