    Let's see:
MK-3 CF-29; I just bought a super clean one for $145 shipped, admittedly I got a good deal, say $200.
    320GB HD; $65
    EnGenius; $30
    DVDRW; Included in mine
    5 Hour Battery; $75
    No Touch; -$75
    AC Adapter; $25
    Ram; $50
So your CF-29 is worth say $375. Remember, you are trying to sell this to people who know how to do what you did so your labor is worth nothing. I bought my MK-3 this week from a large company who cleaned it up to really like new, I'd give it a 9.75 out of 10, maybe a 10. This for less than I can flog the HD Caddy and the media bay drive for on the flea. I can bring it up to your spec for around $110 and 2 hours labor and be in it for $255, or sell it with the 60GB hard drive that came with it and be in it for $205. Virtually all the members on this forum can, or at least think they can, do what I just did. This isn't the fleaBay so you're not going to get your labor back and make a significant profit selling here.

Depends upon where you are trying to sell it. It will be difficult to sell a completed system here because we all buy someones crap and rebuild it. Now on fleabay or Craigslist you could probably sell it quicker because those people are looking for complete systems. I try to do a completed auctions search to get an idea of an items current market value.

    Comparable cf29 sold on fleabay

Ancient Chinese proverb: Snow-cone machine in Alaska isn't worth as much as it is in Hawaii.

Well it's not so ancient and I doubt that it's Chinese either.

And that one is WWAN ready at least. Compared to that machine mine would need another $50 or 60 to get close, that's cost, no labor, shipping, or eBay and paypal fees. And, I stole the basic machine compared to what they are going for on the flea.

Um... People in forums aren't neccessarliy cheap... Just knowledgeable. You should look on the Internet (eBay and other sites) to see what your model may be worth. You definitely will get a different answer here.

And if it is a retired SBC unit.... Deduct 50%...

Well you asked. I'm not cheap, I just know how to buy used computers as do most of the other people here, those who don't want to rebuild their own. Surprisingly, a search of ended listings on eBay shows that it is rather easy to get $600+ for a not very high spec CF-29 IF IT HAS A TOUCHSCREEN, quite a lot more if it has GPS! People even seem to want backlit rubber keybosrds. My angst about what to do with the MK-3 is gone, its out of here. I was thinking about building a Linux machine to play with, but this one can be sold as "mint/like new" so its gone.

We all start off with a cheap model missing parts and end up putting lots of money in them in the end

The only complete models that you have a chance on selling here on the forum for the higher prices are fully modded types
I sold a cf-29 for $900 , but that was a while ago and the cf-29 prices have dropped 35% or so in the last few years

There were a few basic models that sold here around the same time as mine sold for $400
The custom built-in gps add's quite a bit of value

If I was selling it I would drop the price to $400 ,and sell the optical dvd-rw and newish battery separately

The dvdrw should sell for $100 , (I have sold them lately for that price), and the yellow tab battery $70 approx

On the bay, no HDD is worth about $400. With HDD and XP SP3 it's like $600. Paint it red and bloat it with useless free cnet software then it will be in CF-31 price range :)

How does that guy with $1k CF72's have such good feedback? I wanna know the secret!

The secret is that the buyer leaves feedback right away after he opens the package
and they look at the brand new looking Toughbook all the extra goodies they received :)

Wait a few months when the paint starts to scratch off
Then they either loose the Chinese extras or they stop working

And before Zig gets on here and argues with me on this
I will tell you I have painted quite a few Toughbooks in the old days
Both cf-71's and cf-72's and they all look bad after a while
You can not beat the standard finish
    Like Rick and Teo ,
I only buy the best condition models these days so there is no need to put on new cosmetic parts and paint them

I'm not sure what listings you are looking at, but I'm seeing ex SBC stipppers selling for less than $100. The original question was, "why no takers for my ex SBC at $600?"

The only way to "paint" a Toughbook is powder coating.

They're not bad, just most of them are really beat including cracked or broken lower cases, and have bad touchscreens. If you're a careful shopper you can find used CF-29s in much better shape for not a lot more money. I have just bought a CF-30 and a CF-29 MK3 for $540 and $122 respectively. Both are complete including hard drives and caddies, and both would need more than cursory inspection to determine that they had ever been used. Cosmetics don't really matter, when you think of it there is a downside to a really clean Toughbook, you find yourself reluctant to toss it around for fear of marking it up which kind of defeats the purpose. I'm babying that CF-30, I don't want to mess up the "new" look. I'm selling the CF-29, it's too clean for my purposes. Cosmetics are vitally important when you are trying to sell used computers for top dollar.

They are just well used and usually need a bit of work. One needs to pay attention when buying them or just be prepared for the possibility of more repairs than you originally thought. Sometimes you may end up with a parts machine.
They are more in the fixer upper class than the toss a HDD in em and fly class.
