I got my mk4 cf-19 today and I gotta say th LED duo touch is so damn awesome.

Also got a Havis docking station which is also really cool. I have played with it a little bit and so far its great. I swapped in the hard drive from my cf-19 mk1 and i was very surprised that it booted and worked without a hitch. A few drivers auto installed and almost everything was working. I am running win 7 on my mk1 with mk4 drivers for most things so I guess that helps

I am trying to figure out why the mk4 docking connector is different from the mk1-mk3.

My dock says to use only MK4 and i am scared to put my mk1 on there and see what happens.

No wwan on the mk4. We use a mobile base station modem the mbs-1000 in the truck which is wwan, wlan and gps in one unit. The setup is all done over a private hidden inf wlan and it carries over the wwan and gps to the laptop. The antennas on the roof of the truck are much stronger than anything the toughbook could have.

 

You know guys (and gals), i just realized. our priorities are seriously messed up. here he is with probably the best news a man can get, and we go all crazy about his new toughbook. we can at least say congrats before unleashing the toughbook-geek in ourselves, cant we?

So, congrats, mate.

Now that that's settled. What the hell is up with the cpu in that thing? i5-540 at 1.2ghz? My i5-520 runs at 2.4ghz... i know is supposed to be cool and quiet an all that. but at they could've at least gotten 1.8 maybe 2 out of it...

yeah, thats a given. but why? the cf-19 isnt that small. you have plenty of room for decent cooling. sure its got a 10.4 (?) inch screen so it not massive, but i think its big enough.

judging from the clock on your CF-31, its a 540m in that as well. and although there is a clear difference in size, i dont believe it warrants such a drastic underclocking.

 

Well for one thing: My tank of a CF-31 has a cooling fan (Which, runs NON-STOP might I add)... the FIRST EVER from Panasonic on a fully rugged. Lets hope that they don't use the CF-31 as a Guinna Pig and discontinue it quickly because of "fan failure"... There is no fan on the MK4 CF-19's...

 

ah, i didnt know that. then it does warrant such a drastic underclocking.

on the other hand. if in run my asus is power saving mode/ battery mode, it never turns on the fan (unless i do something incredibly drastic like OCCT/ HD video and such.). and it maxes out on 1.6ghz with the 520m. so if a machine that is clearly not built for passive colling can get 1.6 ghz without a fan, why cant the toughbook do it? bit strange, dont you think?

and dont drag the turbo mode into this. its just a wholly useless sales pitch.

 

I won't bring the "turbo button" into anything, but I can say that the switchable GPU on my CF-31 is ! The dedicated video mode works great!! It is VERY noticeable in video games!

So now the CPU being under clocked. Well my guess is heat since there is no fan and also battery life.

Have you ever held a cf-30 battery up to a cf-19 there is a pretty big difference.

Also the cf-19 is very compact and really has no room for fans I don't think. I mean you could probably get one in there but then again we go back to battery life not only to higher clocks need more battery but now we are taking about running fans too. And if the huge chassis of the cf-31 cannot handle passive cooling no way will the cf-19 and its small body be able to do it.

That is my guess.

now that, my friend, is one hell of an invention. i'll give em that. my next machine will have that function. but that gonna take some time. just got this one. i was gonna get one with switchable graphics, but when i found this one for 100€, i couldn't resists. just threw in same ram an new cpu and two harddrives i had lying around. ended up at 180€ for the entire machine.

the cf-19 mk2 (i think. anyhow it was in 08.) is the same size, right? cause i used one of those once and although they're small, i can admit that. but not that small. otherwise, the only toughbooks i can compare it to is my boss's cf-29 and my cf-28. very well, you're the one holding the amchine so i'll defer to your judgement. but i still find 1.2 ghz a bit slow. but then again, i've got a 4ghz hexacore at home and a dual cpu i7 at school, so my view of quick might be a bit... clouded to put it mildly.

 

Well compared to a netbook they are not that small but after holding and using a cf-30 for a while a cf-19 feels tiny.

I so almost no size diff in the mk1 to mk4. There are minor changes here and there but really they look the same.

For compact I mean when you take off the bottom panel. It is compact in there. They spared no space. But I have never really found much empty space in toughbooks to begin with.

I agree they should have gone a bit faster but oh well it is fast enough. I have never really seen Panasonic toughbooks be cutting edge anyway they are always a bit behind the tech curve.
