And so I want to FINALLY mount a CF-18 into my boat

I have access to CHEAP CF-18 digitizer models. LOADED too. 1.2/1.5G and 40G or 80G. protoncomputers1 | eBay

It even comes with a rubber keyboard which is VERY advantageous for a water ridden object...

Question though. I would obviously want to put an OEM GPS unit in it as that is the whole purpose.

I do have CF-19 GPS units in stock, will those work? If not, does anyone have an OEM GPS unit I can buy off them?

The digitizer doesn't bother me too much as once the navigation is up I don't really need to touch the screen. I want to do this because my CF-31 is too big to fit nicely on my console above the steering wheel. I will make some sort of mount out of wood for it to sit flush in there too. This would be a mini summer project :)

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

What about using one of the cfw-07 wireless monitors sync to your cf-19, mounted flush in the console. I see alot of adds on ebay for them used by the boating community.

Also, you could use the small round white external gps antenna like the ones used on police cars, and plugged into the cf-19 mounted inside, and get good coverage while looking custom on the console.

    just a thought.

I dont know how big the console is, but If you wanted to try a 10" PDRC monitor, I have one I can send you, a free bee......

OR, if you still want the entire unit on the dash, I have a OEM cf-18 GPS that I can trade you for a oem cf-19 one, if thats what you want to do.

Ehh, that's one more thing I wouldn't want to deal with.

    It would be cool though.

I seen here some where before some one said the CF-18 one won't work with CF-19 so I am not sure about vice versa. I have a MK5 with factory rubber keyboard and gps. It's a good unit. If you have any gps sleds for a CF-29 you can take the module out of it and it will work. Only thing I didn't double check is to see if the cf-29 antenna would fit in the plastic bump out on the CF-18. I still haven't fully converted that MK1. Also if your unit has bluetooth or wwan from the factory it will have the needed daughter board to install the GPS. It doesn't come with the daughterboard like the CF-19 does.

On a side note if you have kept up with the itronix thread in your forum and read up on the gobook 2 gps that seller on ebay today posted up 10 or 20 more units for 7 bucks plus shipping. The gps is a true PCMCIA card. You would just need a longer antenna wire if you use the factory style CF-18/19 antenna. Just for testing I put one in a MK5 that didn't have gps. Everything you need to know to make it work is in that thread (install files needed)

The PDRC monitor is really not suited for an open boat. It is anything but water resistant.

However, the display mentioned by Sam above is the MDWD CF-VDW07 Wireless Display; not the PDRC CF-VDL02 LCD Monitor, and the MDWD is "moisture-resistant"

So the census here is that the CF-19 GPS will NOT work in the 18 then?

    Thanks

CF-19 GPS will work in a CF-18 as I have done it and it works well.

you need the board that fits the CF-18 that will take the bluetooth and GPRS modems.

I have sent you a PM as well

    I have this WWAN/BT daughter board from CF-19 MK1. I also have CF-18 MK4.
Did any of you guys tried to install CF-19 WWAN/BT board in CF-18 unit?

    Thanks.

    And the answer is... YES!
Most off the functions are working...
Shows on the BIOS "Wireless Modem Enable"
Also, shows "GPS Enable" - but I don't have GPS installed.
There is Bluetooth module installed on the board but doesn't shows in BIOS.

Win7 found the drivers quickly. MobiLink installed and works w/out a problem.

    Dip Switches:
    [1] [2] [3] [4]
    on off off off

    Tested with Novatel EU730 - HSDPA/UMTS - AT&T
and Sierra Wireless MC5725 - EVDO - Sprint

Now, be careful when put in the ribbon. I have plugged the blue antenna to the BT module[?] and the brown to the EU730 module [PCIe].

Install the board when the dip switches facing up, the board will not fit all the way in, but you'll be able to secure the board only on the frame side. When the other side of the board will be a bit higher since there is some kind of a scurity pin under it. Please make sure to have piece of tape to cover that pin, it will short your board if you will not do so and your CF-18 will not power up.

The BT doesn't work I removed it from the board. I don't have a problem with the sim card slot, I pulled the board toward the battery before I tied the screw.
The daughter board does have a usb socket. I don't use it since there is no robber cover on the CF-18 to protect the port, I kept it blocked.

I found the daughter board on ebay for $65 and the 3G works perfectly!

For some reason the bios detect GPS and when it is enabled it shows on Win7 as Com 1, but when I fire up GPS software it can not find anything with Com 1.
any ideas? Is it something to do with CN16? The ribbon came with the board.

You are right, it has to do with CN16. There is one pin, which activates the gps option (and the additional com port) in the bios, when it's connected to ground.
    Here is the gps pinout
