And so what if I kept the OEM GPS enabled and running whilst in a Boeing 757 airplane??

I'm asking because I will be on 5 different airplanes whilst traveling too and from Jamaica. It would be cool to see how fast the airplane is traveling and to record and track the flight route and whatnot...

I'm leaving tomorrow at 5AM for the airport but will try to check once I get to Atlanta tomorrow on these forums to see if I should do this! lol. I don't wanna get in trouble either!

    Thanks

Theoretically nothing, and it should be fine to use while in the air as GPS is a receive only interface - it does not produce any radio waves.

However, I'm pretty sure your unit will still be subject to the rules saying that all electronic devices must be switched off during take off, landing and taxiing, despite the fact that most travellers ignore this by not realising that their phone/iPad etc etc etc is just in standby when the screen is turned off rather then actually turned off.

Realistically, I doubt anything would happen even if you had your unit running GPS constantly through the terminal, flight and end terminal. The amount of business people who covertly use their phones during landing means that if something was going to go wrong, it would of already done so.

Different Airlines have different rules, none of which are based on reality. What Pinecone said in regards to any possible interference with the airplane's electronics, its just a radio receiver. Jet Blue, the only airline I fly, leaves it up to the pilot's discretion. Last year a Sky Muffin went nuts on me, I told her to ask the pilot, she refused, I turned it off. You will ALWAYS lose any argument with flight crew and you will be dealing with the TSA and local law enforcement if you push it. Not worth it. That said, my BU-353 works great on airplanes, I'm not sure about internal GPS. Try it, just turn it off if they ask you to. Congratulations and have a great Honeymoon.

I think it would be pretty cool to be able to watch your flight track, I have always wanted to try it.

It is cool, how often do you wonder what city, river, lake, mountain, etc you are looking at? 525 knots, 37,500 feet, cool.

I have worked overseas for about 6 years now and have flown a LOT of flights. (Saudi Arabia, UAE(Dubai), Egypt, etc) I have a few times forgot to turn my phone off with all the full effects on. I had missed calls and text messages. Now most of the bigger planes have a tv screen with a moving map. It has airspeed, temp, etc. You can even look down from above or straight ahead with cameras built into the plane. Fastest I have been is around 777 mph. I was in a Boeing 777 and we got delayed two hours from Germany. Well about 30 minutes into the flight we captain said he had been authorized to speed up and try and catch up the time. We landed in Atlanta 30 minutes early.

i wouldn't recommend having your toughbook on the plane, period. they dont like things they don't recognize. they guy even threatened me with a taser once. he wanted me to removed the computer from the briefcase. that's pretty hard when the computer is the briefcase. took me twenty minutes to explain. the fact that i put the faulty battery in it by mistake and i would't start, didn't make things better.

I've never had that problem. I love pulling the Toughbook(s) out of the bag and tossing them, and I do mean tossing, into the little grey buckets on the x-ray belt. The suit types with their Macs and Dulls are horrified :D

Rob, the ride from airport to your destination will be life threatening. the folks that pick up your bags have more scars than frankenstein and more knives than a butcher.theplaces you go to look at jewelry and higher end do-dads have armed guards with ak-47's. however when you get to the compound it's great! went to ocho rios and place was amazing food fantastic butterflies everywhere and like something out of a dream. went there on my honeymoon as well and if I could get my wife back on a plane non-sedated would go back again. oh yes, make sure you have passport and even copy of birth certificate in case you need them. I made it into the country and almost didn't makeit out. guess what I forgot to carry with me!....Driller

I used my toughbooks every time in the air to track the path and to shoot some pictures with my toughcam. U have to be close to the window. Only on one flight over East-Canada they told me not to make any pictures.

I have never had one problem with the toughbooks. I usually have two. The cf-t5 and the cf-29. I have got a few questions about them and thumbs up. Most haven't got to really look at one so If I am not in a hurry I let them look.

Okay, I took my 19 to Turks and Caicos, 2 flights to get there, turned off all the wwan/lan, transmitting stuff, and I could not get google earth in gps mode or microsoft streets and trips to pick up even 1 satellite! Your in an aluminum tube, windows angled the wrong way, and a bunch of wires with signals going through them. I never was able to use my gps on the flights there, nor the flight from there to Miami, Miami to Nashville, Kentucky to Colorado, Colorado to Southern California... I should have taken my pocket USB Microsoft S&T gps receiver and tried it. There is no direct look up at the sky on the planes to get signals.....Bummer....

A USGlobalSAT BU-353 will fit very nicely between the pull down shade and the window and will work just fine in an airplane. Been doing it for years. I don't know about other brands. A bluetooth unit might work but now you are using a radio. I suppose that a lot of people use bluetooth headsets on airplanes and that they cause no problems.

I found my eTrex unit would lock up in flight at 535 mph just fine but the USB unit that came with MS S&T would not get a lock even with a good look at the sky. I think some GPS units "assume" you cannot be moving that fast as part of their algorithm, maybe so they can get a faster lock time.

That is a high probability! Just wanted to see if the OEM would work, but it did not.....Pretty difficult smashing you 19 up to the window to try and see if it is..... Oh well, I know I am going fast, I am really high up, and I went where I wanted to go..... :)

The pilot-in-command (aka captain) always has final say on what goes on in their aircraft, the company guidelines are just that - guidelines. If the FA gives you trouble, ask them to ask the captain. Of course, you'll the unruly PAX they'll about in the galley! hehe.

And yes, I've gotten reception at 35,000ft. Blackberries are great at that as you get all your messages sent and received in a little data burst. Just sayin'!

Then again, I normally fly below 6000' and I don't have air conditioning, in-flight meals or entertainment. :)

And so 5 plane rides later the GPS NEVER, N-E-V-E-R, got a signal... Even when sitting by a window on a smaller, slower plane (Airbus 329)

That's the difference between the internal GPS and a good external unit. The internals have gotten a lot better but a good external will beat them every day.
