I use Avast! Anti-Virus and it runs smooth and quiet with windows xp and doesnt slow your machine down at all. Also I run AVG 8.5 and they both get along together fine with no conflicts.

If you want a complete software package with virus/spam/malware and all the utilities you could want, I have been using Systemsuite (now 9) for years and I think it is still on special for $19.95 and that includes three licenses. It will do everything Norton ever thought of doing, but does it better and for less money.

Another suggestion for a low overhead AV program is NOD32 by Eset. I have been running it on my CF-18 and CF-27 with no noticible slowdown.

Read the links that X2P has pointed to
You might have to try several (one at a time) to find one that runs without slowing the system down
You can run task manager and see under the Processes tab your cpu usage and memory use, related to each program
Most of the security programs that you pay for a really resource hungry

I run Mccafe on the backround of my 29 with no noticable slowdown

uses mabey 50 mb of ram, and %1 of cpu time. That %1 includes everything else in my background too.

I just sold the two CF-50's and the CF-51 I built is going to the wife next week when I visit. I now use a CF-52 for my daily driver, but I also have the CF-M34, CF-28, CF-29, CF-74 and CF-18 that I play with and update frequently. I also have a Dolch A320S and a CF-37 that are mostly toys. Hey, once you get the fever.... :D I just enjoy making mods and following along with everyone else on this and Rob's forum.

I use the free edition of Avast on a CF-27, prior to that I used Windows one care and AVG, The computer was noticably faster with Avast.

I'm running Eset NOD32 on both my 18 and my 29, and have been very happy with it. I was previously running AVG, and it really seemed to slow the system down.

I'm using NOD32, too, and it seems to be doing fine. The only thing I don't like is that when you download something big (i.e. archives several GB in size), then NOD32 can take quite a while checking the file and it will quietly start consuming a lot of system resources, leaving you wondering why your machine is crawling. But I don't know a better solution to this either (a pop-up dialogue with "Should I really check this?" would be much more annoying), so I guess it is just something to be aware of.

AVG. Free, unobtrusive, doesn't use much resources, and I haven't had single issue with it yet! Been loading it on every PC to come through our shop for 5 years now.

I've installed Avast Home edition (free) in few computers. It's seems that Avast has a small footprint which allows it to run faster than other antiviruses :D

Clamwin which is the Windows version of the open-source and very well regarded Clam AV. Having come from a *nix background in Sun systems to Windows I am very suspicious of Norton, etc. type utilities and tend to prefer non-commercial products for security and virus protection. Just my take.

I like Avira AntiVir. I am running both the paid and free versions on several PCs and find that it is not nearly as power-hungry as AVG, which I used for many years. As a bonus it runs under Win7!
