    Hi,

I just wanted to know since MOST of you open your TF's did anyone ever find an RFID or some other sort of packing tracking chip in your Laptop? I am wondering when they are going to start doing that soon. There is no real reason for my asking except Curiousity. :D

A freind who is in the computer buisness found a device in a ibm intellistation that he was putting a new hard drive in for me. After exmining it he said it was logging keystrockes and transmitting them over the net. It looked like a usb dongle only it was pluged in with wires and had a sticker on that had a barcode and serial#. He said whichever corprate customer had had it before me must have specified it.

    Huntler -

This is pretty unlikely; much MORE likely is that it was a Hardware Security Key. I've seen them installed INSIDE the box to prevent users from snurching the key & trying to log onto their work LAN from home without authorization. :err: Logging keystrokes is something much more easily done by software over the LAN, even implemented remotely, without ever even SEEING the workstation much less opening the case. :eek2:

Really though back on topic, Anyone open there CF-29's good and noticed any of those 1/2"-2" RFIDs? Japan is a front runner for RFID so I imagine they would use the small versions. It should be flat and be passive, they wouldnt do an active. Its just for inventory tracking.

Funny thing I found was all the major companies that MAKE this chips and market them say they can only be read close by, and now they found with the right equipment that the distance can be hundreds of yards +.

No surprise since people seem to forget Thermal Cameras can see all the way from Space, if you got the Money the equipment can do it. I loved Jericho where the CIA guy is using the Sat all the time, like its available for all to use. lol Doesnt work that way, maybe its a good thing.

I hope CBS releases the rights to SciFi and continues the "new civil war" story. The way they wrapped up the "second season" is how they should have ended the "first season". I noticed they were very careful in the show to paint over the brand and model on the laptop.

Back OT. Has anyone found any RF-ID stuff like this in a 28?

I have been into many, many laptops and never saw anything that wasn't supposed to be there. With that said... There is software that can be installed that can track the laptop anywhere in the world. Provided it can reach the Internet. The company says that even if the hard drive is reformatted that it will reinstall itself and seek out the company over the Internet. Now this costs money obviously and would not work if the company legitimately sold the laptop as they would take it off the list.

RFIDs don't have the distance to track more than a few meters at best. I know that they are in the process of making stronger ones but I wouldn't fear them. People who steal them should fear them putting in the new generation of chips that WILL find them and report where the laptop is.

I never buy my stuff from shady sources... First of all it is wrong... Second of all, as was recently posted, it ends up biting you in the end and costing you more money in the long run.

    TB -

Those "long range" RFIDs are here... I have one in the ID badge for one of my security contracts. They can track my presence pretty much anywhere in the compound if I get within 50 meters of one of their sensor arrays.

I agree, They are small and can track using Cell towers if they are modified to relay the signals.

Heck why do think Cell phones are pushed so much, they can find you with them and can turn them on remote if they want and are near a tower. Excellent tracking device. lol
