My local Fry's had a huge blowout sale the other day. I needed another extra drive so I went there looking for one. I know Newegg is cheaper but did not have the time, so I thought.
I ended up purchasing a WD Black 7200 320Gb drive. I bet I stood there for 15 munites trying to decide between the 7200 Hitachi that I also use or this one. A couple of the guys were expressing how well WD drives are. I figured what the heck. I did do some reading and comparisons on both, they each beat each other in some categories. I have not opened it up yet so I can still take it back. Should I stick with it, or swap it for another Hitachi? It's not like me to go against something I know works, but I did this time. I have been very happy with my Hitachi, it never has given me one hiccup.
This is the one I got: Western Digital WD Scorpio Black
WD3200BEKT, 320 GB, 7200 rpm

I think the general populace at Newegg hates Seagate drives though... -

The only difference I can see so far is it runs pretty warm. I don't think I have gotten under 118 degrees yet with this thing!

Yeah, well... as a tech in the field who's replacing them left and right, don't just blame Seagate - any of the latest batches of hard drives using Seagate's "perpendicular recording" technology are stinking up the joint - Samsung, Hitachi, Western Digital too... they ALL jumped on the bandwagon too quick. These drives don't have enough magnetic mass, or there isn't enough boundary space between sectors - whatever - they just can't keep the low-level format from going to hell.
Expect to be collecting A LOT OF DOORSTOPS in the next year or two; this technology is just NOT YET READY FOR PRIMETIME.

Of course, the platters do make pretty wind chimes... -

I've had good experience with Seagate drives, and have put them in all my toughbooks because they offer built-in encryption.

 I have a seagate 320gb 7200rpm with G-Force Protection in my cf-30
Works great, not up to the performance level the samsung ssd drive has but good value for the money, and it has the shock protection option , a good idea for a laptop drive
