I just received my W8 today, about 20 minutes ago. I got mine from eBay. Since I was not a member here until after I ordered it, I did not get the really great price of $379, but I am quite happy with my $575 price. Anyway, (now that I started my own post OT) back to my question.

Has anyone removed the silver sticker from their W8. Did it come off well, or pull paint off? Is the Panasonic logo still there, or does the sticker pull the logo off? Did you use anything special to remove the sticker?

After I peeled mine off a federal agent came by and confiscated the W8. You might want to reconsider.

Yes. Like "Failure to stop vehicle with front bumper dressed and covered on stop sign." Fine $40. Ft. Gordon, GA 1972 ;)

IOW; you stopped at the intersection, which was beyond the actual STOP sign, eh? ;)

Most state traffic laws work the same way. :p

Actually the front edge of the bumper was closer to 3 inches beyond (I didn't have my transit with me at the time). My front wheel was way behind the sign and the front of the car was a good three feet back from the intersection. I should have guessed something was going to go wrong when I pulled up to to the stop sign and the MP kneeled down to "sight" down the stop sign pole. I always figured MPs got extra brownie points for ticketing an officer. :D

I think I ended up getting the last laugh though, since I was a Public Affairs Officer at the time and was taking a local reporter on a tour. The reporter got a big kick out of it and ended up doing a second story on the sillyness of the military. Ft. Gordon was, at that time, the home of both the MP school and the Signal School. When the Post Commander saw the story that night over dinner, he ordered the MPs to paint lines extending from the stop sign into the lane of traffic so drivers could actually see where they were expected to stop -- and the MPs had to do the painting themselves. The Post Commander was SC and the common wisdom around post was that only the SC soldiers were getting these tickets (We a had different color registration sticker on our cars than those assigned to the MP school.) In order to "avoid tying up traffic" the Commander ordered the MPs to do the painting on weekends.

Not "brownie points;" just "inner satisfaction." ;) :D

    ROTFL!

¹ For the uninitiated, "SC" stands for Signal Corps and/or Signal Center.

I finished up at Ft Gordon in late '65. The only officer I ever got to apprehend (MP for arrest) was a major, We managed to convict him on 11 counts of r-a-p-e (can you believe the pron bot deletes that word?) and numerous other charges. He got life at hard labor at Leavenworth.

Good for you! Leavenworth is quite a place. For a while I was an instructor for the Army's Command and General Staff College and spent some time at their "school house" at Ft. Leavenworth. We had a tour of the "disciplinary barrack" (army for penitentiary). I also did some emergency planning at a major prison in Michigan - boy talk about a difference! You couldn't hear yourself think in Michigan and the prisoners would throw urine etc. at you as you walked by their cells. At Leavenworth it was as quiet as a library with the prisoners marching everywhere in formation. Of course at Leavenworth they had 2 guards for every prisoner. Thanks for your service.

It is a business card sized silver sticker over the Panasonic logo on the special offer W8s. I would take a picture, but this post is actually more interesting visually without it. :D

Huh?? Why would Panasonic paste such a funky looking sticker over their logo??!! Kinda silly if you ask me or am I missing something here?

You must remember that the probable source for these was the replacement units for the military contractor's laptops which were stolen, then recovered.

There was possibly a provision in the purchase contract to cover the manufacturer's name (or merely a protective covering? ;)).

UPS does the same thing with products they purchase, then use out in the general public (like removing the (Ford) emblems off their Econoline vans).

Is that the underside or top view? Mine doesn't look like that at all. It's metallic silver that closely but not perfectly matches the laptop lid.

That explains the parsley stuck between the keys!
And that mysterious mattress tag that keeps reappearing on the base.

The parsley is probably fallout from a raid; the mattress tag is coincidental, but unrelated. As far as the BFTPOPPOPPIPP is concerned, what you do to your mattress is between you and your mattress... :mask:

    Cyrilng,

Why yes, now that you mention it, that is the bottom of the sticker. I presumed that it looked the same top and bottom, but the top is smooth, without that grid pattern.

So as not to confuse anyone I haven't already confused, I have updated the original image with the top of the infamous "sticker".

Cyrilng's post still shows the original image for those who really, really, really care.

It was mentioned that these W8s were bought as a replacement for a load of stolen toughbooks. Presumably when the stolen computers were recovered this order was canceled. Does anyone actually know if that's true? I mean I know a number of fully rugged TB's were stolen and perhaps 2/3rds were recovered. However, it seems unlikely that if CF-31 and rugged tablets were requested the first time that the Army would then decide that W8s would be OK the second time. I would guess it's people trying to put two and two together, not any actual proof that has lead to the conclusion that recovered computers resulted in canceling this order.

The U.S. Army wasn't the buyer: it was DoD contractor iGov Technologies; the company helps develop the Special Operations Command's (SOCOM) tactical local area network (TACLAN). (see links here)
Logic follows a linear path. ;)
