it would be awsome to engineer that adapter into the adapter in the caddy so it goes strait from sata to the caddy port. I saw how it was crammed it there but I think It could be done a little better and retain the shock protection.

yeah shack in real world use you will not notice any difference between the ide samsung and a sata drive. my cf-30 is sata and I have a ide samsung in my cf-29 and really can not tell the difference running apps, movies, installing software, etc. between the both of them.

I paid 20.00 for my sata to pata adaptor. It works but the only way I would use it is with a SSD where shock protection is not an issue.

    Yes

A huge improvement on boot times, and overall feel while in windows

The first upgrade that I do is to change the hard drive
Best bang for the dollar ,other than increasing the ram to at least 768MB

Well this is the reason I posted it. I just wanted to see if anyone had seen it. Right now I have the stock HD but a new one is in sight I will be happy with the IDE and I was only thinking of the adapter to open the availability of drives. I knew that it was much cheaper through somewhere else.

Somebody are recommending the SSD drive like den..r.s.ten but the question is how much? The ssd drive with big capacity is morethan enough to buy two base model unit of cf-29 toughbook. We are trying to save money here but if you have a lot of stock,. I say, go ahead make your day.

No, definately not recommending them unless the price drops on them about a 1000%.

I've emailed back and forth with the guy who has this.... Who also has a BT addition to the CF-29. He is a sometime forum member here (I think) and says he has made this IDE/SATA thing a thing of the past. Minor mods and you have a 7200rpm SATA... Might be worth someone checking into.... I bought one of his BT kits just to see the quality of his work and to see how his differs from mine. That is how we all learn now isn't it?

Doesn't the CF29 Mk 4&5 employ the Intel® 82801FBM I/O Controller? The reason that I ask is that while reading about the guts of my CF29N I noticed that this I/O Controller is said to support 8 USB ports and 2 SATA Ports...

I realize that this is a unsupported feature of this chipset in this application, and may even be masked, but I was wondering if this my be possible/practical to enable in via 3 party magic?

This would be a lot cleaner then the SATA to IDE with its limited speed and Toughness compromise.

    Umm Rick...

That's where Liamw652 got his adapter from, when we were all excited because he was actually ABLE TO GET IT TO BOOT...

His mod been added to the CF-29 FAQ for almost a month now, as it is part of the Unofficial CF-29 Thread.

    mnem
    Simpsons did it.

I've been looking at his bluetooth adapter, I see his uses HP components, are there other ones that are available? I've been looking at getting one to replace my USB one.

    Thanks Mnem.

I have tested a 250g, 500g and a 640g SATA HD. The only question now would a 1TB work as well. This was a comment joked at by Azrial.

I also edited the post about finding a problem with the installation that destroyed the 1st adapter that I used. A small price to pay for getting the installation right.

I am running the 640g WD SATA right now in my MK3/J model. It is working good.

You know, we all joke... but with this adapter, you could probably get 1TB in a laptop like my ancient IBM 380XD...

Maybe next, we should turbocharge my WaterPik...
