i wonder if it is Mu metal shielding ?
-
yep ... Mu metal .
that is magnetic flux shielding .
it also helps with rf shielding .
yeah ...
leave it out .adamwest436 likes this. -
Strange, ive had a load of different 19 and always swapped / changed h/drives and never see one like this, they must of made it for a reason ?
-
it was a selling point .
one could ostensibly state that it improves the survivability of a hdd/ssd by the reduction of a magnetic/rf field .
this is basically true but when it comes to EMP , all the bets are off .
exposure to extremely strong magnetic fields of varying frequency (think super conducting magnets ... the big boys) can damage the data on spinner type drives ... but that little bit of shielding would prove to be worthless in this instance .
i suspect that it was in place to help mitigate the effects of sitting the machine on a magnet or exposing it to a strong field accidentally .

My socks do that when the washing machine door is opened

I haven't seen that either, I would most likely just put them up in the parts pile.

It's a 750 Exabyte HDD of the future. You just have to wait for a compatible interface cable.

With most of the cooling holes blocked.....maybe it would need a cooling system instead of a heater.
IOW protected from scary magnets until the hdd melts. -
