Gocha! That was what I was confused with... I can't locate the Radio Hardware Switch. Where is this little guy?
Thanks

I just found another thread that answers my question. The Radio Hardware Switch is BIOS enabled -- there's no switch on the computer so I've got to go a different direction.

Do you have the radio switch software installed? Check the add/remove programs tool in the control panel.
It needs to be installed to enable the wireless card. If it is not installed, or has been removed, the wireless card won't work. -
Okay... to try to clear this all up (at least for me....) You can "enable" the wifi in the BIOS.... If it is enabled then you need to make sure that the correct driver is loaded. If the driver is loaded then you should be able to use the wifi using Windows. If you want to control it with the ProSet utiity then you need to make sure you have the correct Intel program installed. Once installed the software will have a screen that will allow you to turn the card off or on and have it control the wifi...

Thanks for the info!
I enabled wifi in BIOS and it didn't work. I installed the latest driver (Intel) and PROSet software and that didn't work either. I tried enableing through proset with the switch off via windows controller and that didn't work. The only thing that I need to do now is try BIOS enabling (It was and currently is set to 'Auto') with the driver one more time and then it's time to install that new card that I ordered. I think I'd rather do that anyways... It sounds like fun. That was the whole reason for buying this thing
Anyways, so I went through a bunch of threads and didn't find much in the way of a tutorial on cf-18 maintenance (for beginners) what's a good thread for breakdown and other do's & dont's? Hoe do I be like you guys? -
The intelproset utility will be automatically shut off when you switch to winsuck to control the wireless system. I don't think you did that. If doesn't have a problem on the device manager it means the driver installed correctly.

The only error I get is that the "Radio Hardware Switch" is turned off. There isn't a physical 'switch' type switch that some laptops come with, so I tried setting (in BIOS) from AUTO to ENABLED and still the same error.
PROSet is set as the primary right now and it won't let me switch back to Windows controller anymore.
I'm thinking Cap's got it right with a fresh OS install.

Try grabbing the latest update of the wifi drivers from the panasonic global site.
They will extract into a C:\util_d080215 directory. One of the directories there will be the wswitch directory. Install that, and it will give you a notification area icon for turning the radio hardware switch on and off.
I tried to load the latest intel drivers on my 18 after installing from the factory disks, and wireless ended up all messed up. I finally ended up needing to reinstall from the factory disks, and then update to the latest wifi driver version on the panasonic site, making sure to carefully follow the directions on the web site.

Incredibly obvious suggestion #14:
You could also have an issue where your wireless clients are conflicting; if you're using the ProSet wireless client, be sure to uncheck the "Use Windows to configure my wireless settings" tick under the "Wireless Networks" tab in the Properties for your Wireless LAN connection...

WiFi, HiFi... its all such beautiful noise... -
I did try that -- No joy.
I'm pretty sure I've tried every possible wifi client configuration. It was still inoperative even before I installed PORSet.
Thanks again... -

The ProSet application on the Australian CF-18D machines has a tiny little windows "radio-button" on the main tab that turns the radio on or off.
Be aware that it is set to "off" by default. -
I think the Proset app stinks, I took it off and just use the Winblows one.
-
Just enable the radio button
Go into add + remove programs and uninstall proset
Load the newest Intel wireless drivers from their download site

Update for whom it may concern:
Installed a new wifi card (and respective driver) and we have a signal!!!
bad card I guess. Still have no idea where the 'hardware radio switch is/was.
next up: GPS integration.
Anyways, thanks for the help guys. -
What I was trying to say a few osts up is that there is a small check box (button) that has Radio on/off... But I guess that is all beside the point now.
-
All I could ever find was the WiFi on/off button, not the Hardware Radio.
I took your advice on wifi cards from another post - works nicely.
thanks again, I'm sure I'll be buggin ya'll with other problems before too long. -
Hi All
This is my first post i got my Aussie CF-18d today very impressed. Charged the battery it informs me it will last 5.5hrs??? but we will see. I was wondering about the wireless power switch near the main power switch and the three lights with it? Are these wireless modem? Is there a spot for a SIM card? Sorry to bother you all so soon but i cannot find any info in the manuals or online?
Regards

Hi All
I have noticed several posts asking if these will boot to a USB Flash Drive, as yet i have not tried this but they will boot to a USB Hard Drive. I have a USB Hard Drive with a bootable copy of Acronis on it to Backup my Systems and the CF-18 will boot to it no problems at all only took 15 min or so to backup a full image..
Makes my life easier thats for sure.

There is nowhere to put a SIM card. You will need to use an external USB 3G modem, or use a 3G card in the PC card slot.
Judging from the battery life, you might have got the later "B" battery. These are the batteries with the orange pull tab (original battery has a blue tab). They're rated for 7.65AH versus the 6.6AH of the original. -

However it will boot from a CD, and you can load the OS image files from a thumb drive. -

i can confirm that these boot off usb HDD, currently running <insert non linux non windows os> for toughmac

yowie posted:-
""You can try this method plug the usb drive in and the start the pc press F2 go to the bios and to the boot selection the usb drive will show up when you press the enter key on the HDD selection, select the usb drive as first boot and away you go. It works for me...""
I just tried exactly this method. Upon selecting HDD as the boot option, when I press enter there is no further option given to enable my booting from the Flash Drive. (and I know the flash drive works, and is bootable, since I boot into Xubuntu 9.04 with it on a netbook perfectly).
I have a Mk1 CF-18, maybe that makes a difference?? Otherwise, does anyone have any further help??
Thanks in advance. -
Hi
I don't know if it works with all flash drives but i have tested it with a sandisk & sony flash drives and they both work and two different usb HDD's and they work as well.Attached Files:

Too bad.
Was there ever a BIOS update that my machine (a Mk1) might be missing. I asked on this forum a couple of months ago, and got a negative answer, but maybe installing a BIOS for a later model CF-18 might work? Might also result in my machine becoming a brick ;-) -

Absolutely DO NOT !!!!
