I've done some research here, but have had trouble finding answers to a basic question. Here goes.

I want to clone my cf-29 mk 2 hd and put the cloned drive in my cf-29 mk 1. The source drive and the destination drive (when it arrives) are both 160 gb. (The mk1, by the way, boots up and runs fine with the mk2's hd installed, so the clone of the mk2 hd should be fine).

Here's the oh-so-elementary question: assuming I've got the cloning software (Easeus or hdclone) on the source computer (29mk2), have the destination hd out of its box, what's next? Specifically, how do I hook up the new hd in order to feed it from the source? Do I need to install the new hd it in the mk 1 (and I've checked out Rick's HD Swap Tutorial, so I can get it in the caddy), or does that happen later? Also, does the new hd need to be formatted first, or does the clone software format before cloning? Thanks for your help.

You will need to get a IDE to USB adapter so you can connect your new disk to the CF-29. Then from the CF-29 you clone the disk to the USB HD. Cloning will format the new disk and rearrange the partition sizes where and when needed. I use Acronis to do my cloning/images.

Don't know if the MK2 disk will run in the MK1 it's been a long time since I did anything with the 29's but I'm sure someone here can answer that question.

Thanks RS, that's just what I was looking for. The mk2 hd will work in the mk1; I swapped it, and there was no problem.

Your welcome. Good luck, it's really very easy to do. I have an adapter like this one SATA IDE Hard Drive HDD to USB 2.0 Adapter Cable | eBay

I have now built a desktop just for cloning/image work to speed things up as the usb is slow. But if you are just doing one it's not a big deal. I have to clone 10-20 disks at once quit often.

I understood that the 29 hds are PATA. Does the cable need to be PATA as well?

for the purposes of your question: yes, your usb adapter should be pata.

unless you are planning to run sata drives with an adapter in your 29(s).
