    Toughbook CF-28 running Windows XP.

It wont run on battery power and shuts down immediately when unplugged from the power cord.

If I unplug the power cord I have to re-enter the current date and time in BIOS. I assume this means that the CMOS battery is spent and needs replacing.

I then performed a battery refresh in BIOS where as the computer will only run on ac power and it states there is not a battery installed?????? which there is (refering to the rechargeable battery pack).

I have performed a battery check in windows and it also states the same thing....that a battery is not present or installed.

I have not put a multi meter on the battery to actually verify that it is spent, but if it was completely drained would it indicate that it was not installed?

I'm thinking about replacing the CMOS battery but i'm wondering if there could be another issue where as the computer is not seeing the installed battery. I've had dead batterys in computers before and run them on ac power and if I recall corectly the battery always showed up even if it was dead?

Any ideas what could be causing the computer to not recognize the battery. It is probably dead but it seems weird to me that the computer does not see it where s it's installed.

If your BIOS is not remembering your date and time... You need a new CMOS battery...

If you have either a dead or aftermarket battery... It will not show in the system and recalibrations will not work.

Sound like you need two new batteries.

That is an indication of a bad battery

Thanks Toughbook.....Thats kind of what I thought but I wanted to ask others who know more about it than myself.

Tomcat57....the red battery light does flash when plugged in.

Looks like I'll be opening it up to replace the CMOS bat. and then I'll need to replace the charging bat.

Thanks guys. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions soon.

HI: If you need a new battery see my post (sparkwrite) for a place to buy a new one with Sanyo battery cells. I have bought three of them and so far so good. I dealt with batteryrefill.com and they use Chinese cells and it is hit or miss. I can't promise that the batteries will be good as I have only had this one in my computer for a few days, but I ran it down to the bottom and I got three plus hours on it. There is one plus, the guy who owns the company actually cares about his products. He sent me an email and asked how the battery was doing. To me that is a plus. They are guaranteed for a year. I wouldn't be afraid. He is up in Idaho, out in the sticks and to me, makes a difference. If you google battery universe you can get to his website. Or put in http://www.batteryuniverse.com/. His name is Steve. Spark
