On the battery is the main sticker with all the battery info on, just underneath that, bottom left is another smaller sticker with a barcode and a code, anyone know what that is ?

    Thanks

there is no date stamped on the battery itself, BUT you can find it in PC Information Viewer / Battery Status:
    i.e.
    Battery ID CF-VZSU46 07 06 2601302
    corresponding to 2007 June 26

This one has <600 cycles, 5 yrs old, and still has ~90% capacity. That's amazing, I've never seen that on any notebook battery.
It wasn't used very much, but a battery degrades even when not used. Of course, it depends how it was used, stored (charged, discharged), etc.

P.S. You can also see that in Linux, using dmidecode (full date and serial number).

I get this, is the "total charge index" the amount of times the battery has been charged?

yes, I think so. That's the only program where it lists that. It's proprietary, so only the manufacturer knows how to get it from battery.
You seem to only have 5 cycles on it, from may 2009.
But bear in mind, that partial charges/discharges are not counted.
