Hey gent's - long time to posting, has been about 9 months since I built a TB and to my dismay I went out to get a Hitachi 160G, 5400 RPM from NewEgg and NO JOY ! all I see it WD & Seagate available for ATA drives ? what are we using now that is holding up ? thanks for your input. Would like to stay in the 5400RPM for less heat and at least a 160 gig -
Thanks again - Mega
-
Mega.... What's up???
I've been buying the Samsung Spinpoint after having a few failures with WD and especially Seagate... They sell out quickly on Newegg.... I was just about to try my first order HERE... The best price I've seen so far! Great drives too. -
I like the Samsung HM160HC. Its fast, stays cool and seems to be rugged in my CF-18... I didn't try the other brands yet...
-
Sorry... That link was a SATA drive... Good thing I didn't complete the order... Will post new link in a sec...
EDIT: I just edited the link above... It goes to a different place. The price was so good I just ordered 5 drives plus a bunch of RAM... -
got it - thanks for the Info -

Craig. -
I bought that drive too hearing that it's the 'fastest' 2.5" PATA drive ever made. I've been pretty happy with it, however in ubuntu linux there have been some strange issues. They are most likely driver issues for the ide chipset, and not related to the drive.
To sunrk: have you mounted any of those toughbooks in your saab 900 ? -

Anyways, my vote also goes to Samsung. Those are some great drives. I was planning on possibly picking one up as well. -
Red Dragon... You have consistently the nicest avatar on any forum... Can you tell me who she is? Well... I know you can... WILL you tell me who she is?
-
Plus, he keeps rotating the pictures with her in them...never stays on the same one for very long. I would love to see the entire set that were taken at that show and any other where she attended.....WOW!

Yes, yes, yes... but on to the important stuff...
Did he get schpanked? And if so, was she involved?

Hitachi drives scare me. I see way too many dead here at the shop.
My vote goes for WD. I VERY rarely see their drives fail. -
Though in the "big drives" I'm seeing massive numbers of failures in ANY of the latest generations of drives using Seagate's "Perpendicular Recording" technology. ALL brands seem to be affected - WD, Seagate of course, Hitachi, Samsung and Fujitsu... I've seen OODLES in the last 6 months.
mnem
Why is the "perpendicular bop" just NOT AS SATISFYING?!?!? -
I have a 320GB and a 500GB with the G-FORCE sensor in my cf-19 and cf-30
I have had good luck with seagates in my desktop systems

You know Rick, having been in and around the military for over 30 years I have friends that could enter your house tonight, cover you with cat fur balls and your family would never know anyone had ever been there...ah yes, testicles fry up quite well and make excellent cat treats!
-
Uh.... I take it you like cats?
The best bumper sticker of all time is;
Ask Me About Microwaving Cats For Fun and Profit!
Actually... Our family used to have a cat when I was growing up. It was pretty cool... I had the neighbors thinking I had it trained. (Right!) Actually... I knew its movements so well I knew what it was going to do whenever it came around. The kids in my old neighborhood used to go home talking about the trained cat up the street. -

Now I understand why some animals EAT their young... -
So, just to review, the general concensus is on the Samsung? TB, your link says that it is a bare drive, I have had mine apart and it seems simple enough to replace, Is it that bad? Mine is making an awful racket, and the best I can do is the dreaded blue screen
Is there any way to recover my data and most importantly, my school work? This DELL is just too light in my lap!!!!
-
Also wanting to upgrade to XP, should this be a consideration in the selection of a new hd? (7200 rpm?)
-
After you get a new drive and reload the OS, you can try to purchase an external HD enclosure for your old drive (USB version) and see if you are able to retrieve your files. It's not guaranteed, but for $20 on the enclosure, it's worth a try. I have gotten that to work several times.
-
I have one of these; it's handy as a pocket on a shirt:

It really is the kind of tool no computer user should be without.
Be careful & check out the reviews on Newegg when shopping for one of these. There are some REALLY EL-CHEAPO ones circulating that come with substandard AC adapters; they're frying people's hard drives!

Lol, you could always eat your young as well
That wont pan out too well when you got the bathroom though -
Yeah.... If you have several old lappy drives... Buy a couple of the enternal kits... They make great storage devices....
Mnem... You sound like you'd make a great neighbor.... Uh... As long as my dog didn't bark at night....
j/k... I don't have a dog.... -
I ordered a WD 320GB, 5400rpm from the egg for $95. Ordered this afternoon, was shipped today. Here is the link -

Looks like Samsung does not offer anything larger than a 160GB. -
Installed a 320 GB drive in CF-28S and it recognised it as 305235MB. Its formatting it now, looks like there is no 160GB size restriction. Will check in other 28s and see.
-
The bios is what I would be concerned about and it reports the size without decimal places
Look in the bios (F2 when booting) and report the size
I'm betting it says 137GB
Alex -
Yes you are right, that's exactly what it says. Plus, now it just sits there with a blank screen and does not even boot from CD anymore. Guess I will have to partition it to less than or equal to 137GB and then use the next partition for data. I have been told it is faster that way - have windows installed in one partition and your data in another (specially if you have a lot of data)
-
Good idea
Yes making the first partition for the O/S less than the 137 gb limit is the safest way
Alex -
Is this a viable option for a low to medium tech savvy toughbook pilot to install into my 28? I value honest opinions.

I was thinking 7200rpm because I want to upgrade to xp and don't want to slow it down any. Thoughts? Need to order something soon! -
You would have to be "Dilbert" class Engineer to pull that one off... It's SATA and your Cf-28 needs IDE.
mnem
So... NO would be the idea I'm trying to get across here... -
oops! I thought the 28 was an ATA machine?
-
Get a 160, 250 or a 320 GB like I did. You need a Pata drive, not a Sata one. BTW, some 5400rpm drives have beaten 7200rpm drives in tests. I believe the 7200rpm drives generate more heat too. I can only find 5400rpm drives in the larger sizes. The WD blue 320GB from new egg for $93 is my third one, but first in a CF-28. Used them in a Compaq and a CF-48 before.
-
Just to skewer any confusion - "PATA" is NOT what I would call a proper technical term; it is the misbegotten brainchild of non-technical persons (the CompUSA/BestBuy crowd) trying to differentiate between IDE/ATA and SATA. Using the term instead of IDE or ATA is kindof... dorky. Unfortunately, the term has become common with a certain class of would-be hackers, so it's becoming unavoidable.
IDE, ATA and SATA are part of the same family of interfaces - the ATAPI family. The difference is where one places the actual connector in the control interface; with SATA, it's further downstream so one can avoid having to connect a 32-bit data bus between the HD and controller, but can rather substitute a high speed serial connection instead. The actual electronics are very similar.

This PSA brough to you by the Council for DON'T BE A DOU(HE! -
Dang he's smart!
-
Too much jib jab for this time of year, it makes my head hurt. I just need one of the guru crowd to make a solid suggestion so I can try to get back to my school work! lots of brain power floating around here. I don't need a huge hd, just something that is generally accepted as reliable and that may help me to run at least xp, and as close to plug-n-play as possible.
-
No extra JibJab
Samsung HM160HC
Its a 5400 160gb ide drive
Set the first partition to less than 137GB
Alex
Best HD that is "still" available
