    Hey buddies!
It was a long time since I been here. After knowledge how to downgrade temperature using thermopads and arctic silver 5, changing keyboard and fight between me and touch-lcd I have new one:

    1. Installed HDD - 40GB
    2. Target: upgrade!

What size is max for bios in CF-29 MK III ?

I heard about 100GB its limit for. Bios version was never flashed.

Put in what ever you want...160GB is a good size for it.

Sure if you want to BUT you will have some reading to do. Do a search for " CF-29 SATA adapter " or this " cooldrives "...use the search in my sig.

I have found with any of the CF-29's that to big of a drive it slows it down way to much

You may want to avoid :(.Samsung. :(. Search the forum and you will see that the later cf29's don't like them.

In Poland I have too cheap drivers but what about lifetime long? Bad sectors and others problems will be on my head since change HDD. Right now I have no problem with original HDD. I saw video how to replecement and that operation right be called destructo for original manufact. So right now I have no idea to do. 40GB is small but stable work is bless. Cheap HDD maybe will go down few months after replecment and that clue I need to check. BTW: Thanks for all reply!

Can't think of anyone specific, but it's been done on a number of occasions.

Good performance increase but the issue with far to many Pata SSD's has been reliability due to bad controller design & a declining market for Pata drives in general prevents any further investment.

You'll find that most people bought what they perceived to be a compromise between performance & value for money....so no particular make but you do get stung compared to the Sata variety for something with far lower performance.

To give you some idea, someone from another forum tuned in to a thread & suggested the OWC Mercury Legacy Pro, the spec looked good & at the time it was a current production model, but the 120GB would be around $200 more than what a CF-28 is worth, so you may still get one but it will come at a high cost.

So....when I say good performance the stock drive on a Cf-28 would have an access time of around 24ms, & transfer rates of around 20MB/second, the typical access time of an SSD is around 0.2ms & transfer rates in a CF-28 I would guess to be around 50-60MB/s.

You could keep an eye out for a used one, but since a new one was not that reliable don't expect too much. :)

I was slow on the draw again, missed this whilst I was thinking....yeah, I know it's dangerous. :(

I never did buy one of those KingSpec drives, I think they held back with the information that you manually over-provision by a minimum of 50% or it's curtains within a week.

Try over-provisioning by 50% with a 32GB drive....that's how they are known for there Sata-I performance....they perform a lot faster with buck-shot in them. :)

I just new I was going to get nailed on that one (in too much of a hurry). Really it was just an example since I am not sure of the speed limit on the 28. What I should of said is....

just because you are installing a faster drive does not mean you are going to see a big speed increase since it will only run as fast as the 28's motherboard lets it and no faster

edit...I have this funny feeling I am digging myself deaper in a hole :laugh:

If I put the cf28 in the front seat of a Ferrari going 160mph, will the cf28 be faster than in the front seat of my Ranger?:hi2:

I was running two CF-28's with the poor mans SSD. One mk2 and one mk3. The had a high speed compact flash with a CF to IDE adapter for a hard drive. They both had xp and 512 of ram and ran very well.

I remember some eBay sellers at one time had a disclaimer that there kingspec ssd would not work with a cf-28. Not sure what the problem was or if it was just a certain kind.

That's called a "Normal Day" in this part of the world. :)

My application to join the Ranger Forum was rejected :( so I may be a little bitter & twisted toward that particular marquee....

    Ferrari accelerating (160mph) against the Ranger top-end (45mph) :p

A CF-28 will be 115mph faster in a Ferrari added to which, the Ranger is more likely to break down. :D

I could always try a few therapy sessions.

Yeah....a couple of years ago the KingSpec looked a good option for those with a Pata interface, I sent one of the on-line sellers an email asking why the were stating this particular drive is unsuitable for Panasonic Toughbook's, I don't recall the exact wording in the reply, but something in-keeping with....sorry for your disappointment but this drive requires +5v & Panasonic uses +3.3v.

Excellent marketing, I'll bet they sold heaps.
