Hello all,
I want to clone my cf-29 hard drive. What's the best drive choice these days? I don't need anything larger than 160 gb.
Thanks,

Western Digital for pata standard platter drive.
SSD is a bit more difficult... -
There's not really a lot of choices nowadays; IDE drives are legacy technology, so the only thing even close to "New" you're going to find is NOS, PULLs, and MFR Refurb units. If you're very lucky, you may find one on the clearance rack at Office Whatever or Best Bunk or Fry's that you can buy and actually get MFR Warranty; otherwise you're gonna be stuck with eBay.
Go to eBay; type in 2.5 IDE, select the HARD DRIVES category, then tick off the "US Only" and "New" checkboxes. Accepting any hard drive from China is a huge risk; if you receive anything at all it's about 33% likely to be a used junk pull from god-knows-what as what you actually bought.
Shop the vendors as carefully as the product; look for vendors with a lot of positive feedback, and look for vendors offering warranty on their products. Look for listing that have SquareTrade warranty available and buy it. Also, watch out and make SURE you're getting an IDE drive; my best estimate is that at least 40% of the IDE hard drives that come up in your search will actually be SATA. Your CF-29 will work with any 2.5" IDE HDD that's 40GB-320GB; they'll 99% be the 9.5mm height you need.
Avoid the Samsung Spinpoint HDDs mentioned in the CF-29 FAQ stickied to the top of the forum FOR EVERYBODY TO READ FIRST BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS; also avoid Fujitsu HDDs: IMHO, they're the cheap-@ss brand that MFRs put into their cheapest, WalMart grade garbage, and the brand every MFR goes to when they want some oddball form-factor or interface as cheap as possible.
My best luck has been with Hitachi and IBM TravelStars, though SeaGate's 2.5" drives 250GB & up have allegedly resolved the failure issues that plagued their 80 & 120GB models.
Ignore any 2.5" HDD that's for server use; they'll often be advertised with a picture of a blade-type enclosure. They're not meant for portable use and don't have the same kind of shock protection as laptop HDDs have.
Of the ones I see right now, I'd be shopping this one if i can get it under $60:
Hitachi 5K160 HTS541616J9AT00 160 Internal 7200 RPM 2 5 PATA Laptop IDE 102645848105 | eBay
It's a 5400RPM drive, but it has a good big cache.
This one: It's probably a MFR Refurb sent to someone as a Warranty replacement; I don't see the usual Ser# & warranty codes on the package, but that $11 SquareTrade Warranty is worth every penny. Don't pass it up if you buy this one.
Hitachi 100GB 2 5" IDE Laptop Hard Drive HTS541010G9AT00 000061425019 | eBay
This one:
Probably NOS from some store, maybe bought at auction; I see a fair amount of shelf wear on the box. Again; get the 3-yr warranty from SquareTrade for $15.
Hitachi Travelstar 2 5 inch Internal Hard Drive 2 in 1 PC Upgrade Kit PN 0A50817 | eBay
There are a LOT of IDE SSDs on the market right now; many right around $100. I'm woefully ignorant of your options there. Search the forum for "IDE SSD" and I'm sure you'll find a bazillion discussions to help you decide.

As the folks around the hills here used to say..."you can take it to the bank"...great post M...good to see you around.
I like a 5400 drive for these older machines. Spin = heat.
