This CF-52 EK 2.4 came with a vista COA (No Hard Drive or Media)

I'm not inclined to use Vista.

I have Ubuntu on another 1.8 CF-52 that I installed last year that doesn't let the sound work.

What would you acquire to install on it? & does 64 bit install on this machine?

It's for my daughter who is familiar with XP on her CF-74 at college? The hard drive is in it & I'm ready to go to the next step.

    Thanks!

I would go with XP or W7 32bit. To run 64bit you will need lots of memory because it loves it...

Is there any thing besides ubuntu on the open source?

Is there much difference between XP & 7 on the surface?

    Thanks!

W7 runs very good on a CF-52 and if you are going to install a SSD in it then you do want W7.

Will W7 load right off the disc?

XP is needing the usb drive with drivers?

I have never had any problem at all loading W7 on a CF-52 MK1, 2 or 4 . Are you thinking about a SSD ? I have SSD's in all my 52's and it runs so fast...loads windows in about 18 to 22 seconds and runs every thing so much faster and with the price dropping on them all the time it is hard to pass them up. I put an Intel ssd into my CF-52 Mk2 and loaded W7P 64bit. Everything works and the unit is very nice to use. W7 loads off the disc, no extra drivers needed at boot.
Don't know why you would have no sound with Ubuntu. I previously had Ubuntu and Mint loaded onto the CF-52 Mk2 with no problems.
As to which is the best OS for the CF-52, it boils down to what you are comfortable with and what you want. The units will run any OS you want to run. If you do not need GPS or WWAN programs, then run a version of Linux. If I didn't use GPS or WWAN, I would be running Mint.

I think it was 12.04. I loaded it this spring, after I got the unit from the junkies, to make sure all the hardware was good. Once I knew there were no problems with the unit I loaded WVB because that was the COA for that model. I did the ssd and W7P64 upgrade about 3 months ago.

As above, Win 7 is nice, but if you want to save some $ this is a nice Linux OS to try:
Easy enough to try, just go to this link to download the iso:
Linux Mint 13 "Maya" - MATE (32-bit) - Linux Mint
Then go get you this little gem of a program, unetbootin:
    UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads
This will allow you to make a usb install of the downloaded "iso" from above.
You're all set, of course, you'll have to change the boot options in bios, but that is all.
Plug in the a/c, boot and go!

    Just my 2cents...

I have been running my CF-52 on Windows 7 Pro 64 for about six months. (When I got it) I had to do some research on the video and sound since Panasonic doesn't support 64bit OS on the 52, Once I got that straightened out though, I upgraded the memory to 4gig, the HDD to 500gig, and now dual boot Win7Pro64 and BackTrak 5r3 and I LOVE this machine! I run autocad, 3D modelling, CNC router conversion programs, dev environments for Java/Android, sign/vinyl cutting software, Adobe CS4, and I have yet to really see it bog down on anything I've thrown at it. BackTrak even likes the internal wireless card! And that's nice cuz there's only a handful that work well. Truly an impressive machine,,,and to top it off, it was FREE! Gotta love people who upgrade and scrap 'old' computers cuz the OS corrupted!
